Teaching Assistant - SEN job summary

Term-Time + Training Days. Part -Time 31.25 hours per week. Fixed Term until August 2026.

Our SEND provision is well-established and highly valued within the school and across our Trust. Teaching Assistants are a key part of ensuring children with complex needs can access learning and thrive in school. Staff benefit from working in a strong, supportive team with a mix of experienced practitioners and newer colleagues who bring fresh ideas.

The team is made up of Teaching Assistants with a range of experience, from very experienced colleagues who have worked in SEND for years, to colleagues who are newer to the role and learning alongside others. The team is managed by our experienced SENCo and Assistant Headteacher. Mentoring and peer support are built into the team’s culture, so less experienced staff are not left unsupported.

We are especially proud of the way our Teaching Assistants build trusting relationships with children. For example, one recent success was supporting a child with high levels of anxiety to re-engage with learning after a long period of non-attendance. Through patient, consistent support from the team, that child is now attending regularly and participating in class. Achievements like this are celebrated across the school.

Our SEND team has successfully developed a specialist provision room which supports children with complex needs through play-based and sensory learning. Moving forward, we plan to develop this further.

All our Teaching Assistants have access to CPD, opportunities to work with external professionals. There are also opportunities for progression into Higher-Level Teaching Assistant roles or wider roles opportunities across the Trust.

Our SEND team runs enrichment tailored to the children, such as sensory exploration, outdoor learning, cooking and life-skills activities, and participation in whole-school events with adaptations made so all children can join in.
