What skills and experience we're looking for

The Five Islands Academy is seeking an enthusiastic and committed Teaching Assistant to join our welcoming island community. We are an all-age, multi-site Church of England academy serving the five island communities of Bryher, St Agnes, St Martin's, St Mary's and Tresco. Rated Good by Ofsted (November 2023), with Outstanding for Personal Development, our school is a place where pupils develop a powerful sense of community and are supported to reach their full potential.

We have an exciting opportunity based at our small St Martin’s Base from September 2026. Post holders will work closely with the St Martin’s Lead Teacher, supporting children with one-to-one and small group learning both inside and outside the classroom.

About You:

You will have a patient, caring and child-centred approach, and a genuine commitment to inclusion and the wellbeing of all learners. You will be able to build positive relationships with pupils, support them across all curriculum areas, and respond with sensitivity to a range of educational, physical and emotional needs. Experience of working with children with SEND is desirable, as is a relevant vocational qualification (NVQ Level 3), though enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and develop professionally are equally valued. You must hold, or be working towards, a Grade 4/C or above in English and Maths GCSE, and have a working knowledge of basic ICT.

Five Islands Academy is a through-school in a remarkable islands setting, where we believe that every child is capable of achieving excellence. This all age, multi-site, Church of England academy serves the five island communities of Bryher, St Agnes, St Martins, St Mary’s and Tresco. It joined the Leading Edge Academies Partnership, a supportive, forward-thinking multi-academy trust, in 2019. Five Islands Academy is a high-achieving, creative and caring school with a real focus on building strong and inclusive relationships.

There are around 280 students on roll across 4 school sites. Secondary students and the majority of primary students are based on theSt Mary’s multi age site. This new building was opened in 2011 and provides a bright, open, well-resourced learning environment for the students. Key Stage 2 children from St Agnes, Tresco, Bryher and St Mary’s spend every Friday at Carn Gwaval, mixing with a wider group of peers, preparing for transition and making the most of the extended facilities. Secondary students from the off islands board at Mundesley House Monday to Thursday, returning home at the weekends.

We are proud to be an inclusive school, where each child is supported through their school journey and prepared for a successful transition to post-16 education and training. Our children’s learning has been transformed over the past six years through our focus on the FIA learning journey: a thoughtfully chosen curriculum and consistent, inclusive protocols for teaching. We have a powerful vision for navigating together through this journey to nurture curious, collaborative, creative global learners with rich knowledge and confident oracy. Our most recent Ofsted inspection (November 2023) judged our provision to be Good in all areas, with Outstanding for Personal Development, saying: "Pupils develop a powerful sense of community" through a culture and curriculum that, "expands their horizons and helps them to keep their options open."
