Youth Mentor & Intervention Specialist job summary

Are you passionate about transforming the lives of vulnerable young people? Do you have the resilience, compassion, and skill to support those facing barriers to education, engagement, and safety?

The Avenue Centre for Education (ACE) is seeking a Youth Mentor & Intervention Specialist to join our dynamic Multi-Disciplinary Specialist Team (MDST). This is a unique and rewarding opportunity to work across a pioneering three-tier Alternative Provision model, supporting young people aged 11–16 at risk of exclusion and exploitation.

About the Role

As Youth Mentor & Intervention Specialist, you will:

  • Provide 1:1 and small group mentoring to young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

  • Design and deliver evidence-based interventions to address issues such as criminal exploitation, gang affiliation, and antisocial behaviour.

  • Work across ACE and Luton secondary schools, promoting reintegration and safeguarding.

  • Collaborate with staff, families, and external agencies in a trauma-informed, multi-agency framework.

  • This role is central to our early intervention strategy and offers a chance to directly influence positive outcomes for some of Luton’s most vulnerable young people.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience supporting children who have experienced difficulties in education, an understanding of the reasons why this may be the case and and how to start the process of personal growth. In this role you will be required to support small groups of learners delivering sessions which help them to integrate into their future educational provision. You will be focussed on ensuring that you are providing the best experience and care possible for the students.

We are looking for a candidate who:

  • Has recent experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs.
  • Understands the risks associated with exploitation and is confident working with those impacted.

  • Is able to build trusted relationships and act as a positive role model.

  • Can work flexibly across sites, both independently and as part of a multi-agency team.

  • Is committed to inclusive practice and safeguarding.

  • Desirable but not essential:

  • Background in youth work, education, social care or therapeutic support.

  • Knowledge of issues including child sexual exploitation, gang involvement, domestic abuse, or substance misuse.

  • Training in restorative practice or trauma-informed approaches.

Please refer to the Job Description and Person Specification for the key skills and experience that are required for this role.

The role is fixed term until 31st March 2026 linked to funding from the DFE Change Programme.

ACE can offer the successful candidate the support from staff, parents and members (governors) who are enthusiastic, caring and committed to working as a team to achieve the best journey for our students at ACE. You will have the opportunity to develop new skills through guidance and support of the Senior Leadership Team. You will be able to enhance your career by enrolling on the school’s numerous training and CPD schemes that effectively progress the knowledge and skill set of our staff team.

Please ensure that your application addresses all areas of the Job Description and Person Specification. We reserve the right to close this vacancy early if a suitable candidate is found. Applicants for this public facing post will need to demonstrate the ability to converse, and provide effective help or advice, fluently in spoken English.
