Apprentice Caretaker job summary
St Peter’s Collegiate Academy is seeking an enthusiastic and committed Apprentice Caretaker to join our dedicated site team from October 2025. This is an exciting opportunity for someone starting their career in facilities management, maintenance, or estates, offering valuable hands-on experience in a supportive and professional school environment.
As an Apprentice Caretaker, you will play an important role in helping us maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for our pupils, staff, and visitors. The role is offered as a fixed-term apprenticeship contract, working 37 hours per week, all year round, with salary in line with the National Apprenticeship Wage.
About the RoleWorking under the guidance of our Site Manager and caretaking team, you will learn the essential skills required to maintain a large and busy secondary school site. Your training and day-to-day work will cover a wide range of responsibilities, including:

Assisting with the security of the school site, ensuring that buildings are opened, locked, and alarmed as required.

Supporting the maintenance of school buildings, grounds, and facilities, carrying out basic repairs and reporting issues that need specialist attention.

Helping to ensure that classrooms, communal areas, and external spaces remain safe, clean, and fit for purpose.

Working alongside contractors, suppliers, and Academy staff when maintenance or improvement works are carried out.

Developing awareness of health and safety procedures, including fire safety, manual handling, and COSHH regulations.

Supporting the wider school community by helping set up for events, activities, and exams.
This apprenticeship is designed to provide you with practical knowledge and transferable skills in caretaking, facilities support, and property management. You will receive training and mentoring, while also gaining formal apprenticeship qualifications to support your career progression.

Previous experience in a similar environment is not required, but a genuine interest in facilities work and supporting the smooth running of a school is essential.
