What skills and experience we're looking for
Passionate about inspiring young people? Join us in inspiring the lively little learners at Harris Primary Academy Haling Park as an Apprentice Class Teacher. This is a paid role that allows you to complete teacher training whilst being employed by your school.
The NIoT's Initial Teacher Education is a fully immersive school-centred programme – aspiring teachers will be in the classroom from the very start. But full immersion does not mean that you will be thrown in the deep end: our trainees are mentored and have central training once a week. And you'll have the confidence of knowing that you are participating in a programme that was designed by some of the most experienced teachers and leaders in the country, drawn from four leading school trusts with decades of teacher training between them.
We are looking for strong candidates who already have classroom experience such as unqualified teachers and Higher-Level Teaching Assistants, as apprentices will start on a higher timetable.
You will need the ability to develop effective relationships with relevant stakeholders: children, parents and carers, colleagues, peers, and external agencies.
You will also need to meet the NIoT's eligibility criteria, which are:
- A degree awarded by a UK higher education provider, or a recognised equivalent qualification
- A standard equivalent to grade C/4, or above, in the GCSE examinations in English and mathematics
- A standard equivalent to a grade C/4, or above, in a GCSE science subject examination
- School experience – length and roles may vary depending on the experience of each individual

Further information about the job
During the course you will spend one day a week at Core Training, consisting of a blended model of online and face-to-face sessions, based at one of our ESL delivery locations closest to you. This training will make up some of your Off the Job Training hours required for the PGTA apprenticeship standard. As this is a school-centred, immersive programme in which you will be teaching throughout the academic year, the rest of your week is spent in your employing school. The training sessions are facilitated by our expert practitioners who will model outstanding planning, teaching, and assessment to support your development as a teacher. You'll have lots of opportunities to interact and work with peers across subjects and phases.
Apprentices can start teaching on a 60% teaching timetable, rising to 80% towards the end of training. We ensure that teaching loads are always appropriate for the apprentice teacher's individual stage of development. As a teaching apprentice, you will be assessed holistically against the NIoT ITE Curriculum.
Commitment to safeguarding
The Harris Federation and all our academies are committed to ensuring the highest levels of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and we expect all our staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All offers of employment are subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, references, an online search, and where applicable, a prohibition from teaching check will be completed.

Here at Haling Park we aim to provide a safe and happy environment for our children, where they can thrive and enjoy their learning. We are all ‘learning to be the best we can be’ and this ethos is underpinned by our Golden Rules and Values: Citizenship, Friendship, Kindness, Responsibility, Respect, and Resilience.
Whatever a child’s background or starting point, we want to make sure that they finish Year 6 with the knowledge and social skills necessary to succeed.
Each child will be taught in the way that suits them best and we will step in quickly if a change is needed. For some children, this might involve additional support if they are finding something difficult and for others it could mean stretching them more to keep them interested.
Our Academy will be relaxed and comfortable but pupils will know that good behaviour is expected of them. They will be frequently praised and rewarded for trying their best and for being kind, hard-working and well-behaved.
There will be a zero tolerance approach to any type of bullying.
