As the Apprentice Site & Facilities Assistant, you will gain hands-on experience of how a modern STEM college operates day-to-day, learning about site operations, maintenance, health and safety, and compliance. The role is closely supported and supervised throughout the apprenticeship and does not carry overall responsibility for site safety or statutory compliance.
Under the guidance of the Premises Manager, you will:
Support the day-to-day upkeep of the school site, buildings, and grounds
Assist with routine site checks (e.g. fire alarms, emergency lighting, water hygiene)
Help prepare rooms for exams, events, and meetings
Shadow contractor visits and learn how site permits and supervision work
Assist with minor repairs and maintenance tasks
Learn how planned preventative maintenance (PPM) is scheduled and recorded
Support sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives
Take part in emergency procedures and drills as part of your learning
Maintain accurate records and logs
Apprenticeship training includes:
Level 4 Facilities Manager Apprenticeship (Mercury Training)
Protected off-the-job training time (minimum 6 hours per week)
Dedicated workplace mentor
Formal reviews every 8 weeks
We’re looking for someone who:
Has a genuine interest in facilities, premises, or estates work
Is committed to learning and completing an apprenticeship
Is reliable, punctual, and professional
Works well as part of a team
Is confident using basic IT systems (email, online forms)
Has some experience in maintenance, caretaking, or practical work
Has basic DIY skills
Has an awareness of health and safety principles
What the school offers its staff
Why work for UTC Portsmouth?
A purpose-built STEM environment with modern facilities and resources
Supportive line management and senior leadership who invest in career development
Exceptional and wide ranging CPD opportunities

This role offers a brilliant starting point for a career in facilities management, with structured training, support and real experience in a professional education setting. If you’d like to see the college and learn more about the role, we’d be happy to welcome you in for an informal visit.
