Job Title: Art & Design Technology Technician

Salary Grade: Hay Scale 4 ( £26847-£28153 plus HWA Allowance £500 FTE)

Hours: 37 hours per week (Term Time + 10 days, including 5 INSET days)

Reports To: Head of the Creative Studies Faculty

Are you organized, practical, and passionate about supporting creative education? Hertswood Academy is seeking a dedicated Art & Design Technology Technician to join our vibrant Creative Studies and Arts Faculties.

About the Role

As our technician, you will play a key role in keeping our creative departments running smoothly. Working under the direction of the Head of Faculty, you will support teaching and learning by preparing equipment, managing stock, and ensuring our studios and workshops remain safe, organized, and inspiring environments for students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Resource & Class Preparation: Prepare equipment, materials, and resource packs across Food, Textiles, and Art. Complete weekly food orders and support staff during practical lessons.

  • Health & Safety: Maintain practical spaces, tools, machinery, and software in line with Health and Safety regulations. Perform safety checks, manage COSHH/hazardous substances, and ensure safe disposal of waste.

  • Maintenance & Inventory: Carry out day-to-day maintenance on equipment (including food technology appliances), run routine checks, manage stock levels, and assist with inventory control.

  • Classroom & Faculty Support: Assist teaching staff and students during practical sessions, prepare resources for non-specialist cover teachers, and assist with photocopying and resource manufacturing.

Who We Are Looking For

Essential Criteria:

  • Education: Minimum GCSE level (including English & Maths at grade C/4 or above).

  • Certifications: Level 2 CIEH Certificate in Food Handling (or willingness to obtain upon appointment).

  • Technical & Practical Skills: Practical experience maintaining equipment and handling materials across Food, Textiles, or Art.

  • Safety Knowledge: Strong understanding of Health & Safety regulations, manual handling, and hazard identification.

  • Core Competencies: Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, with a flexible approach to prioritizing your daily workload in a dynamic classroom environment.

  • Computer Literacy: Basic working knowledge of ICT programs.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Previous experience in an educational or school environment.

  • A relevant food qualification, Craft Certificate, First Aid training, or COSHH certification.

  • Knowledge of secondary school Art & Design Technology curricula.
