What skills and experience we're looking for

We are an extremely active, lively and welcoming school, committed to giving all our children and young people the best possible opportunity to engage in learning, achieve, and make progress. We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, proactive and hard-working Art and Design teacher who is an outstanding classroom practitioner and is committed to improving outcomes for children and young people with SEN and/or disability and their families. They will have responsibility for teaching, leading, and developing Art and Design, and for leading Design Technology, across the school. A strong commitment to proactive collaboration with Arts colleagues and organisations is essential – please see job description for further details of the post.

The successful candidate will be:

  • Committed to developing personalised learning, curriculum and assessment in Art and Design for children and young people with SLD/PMLD/CLDD, using a wide range of adaptive teaching strategies, resources and assessment tools.
  • Committed to developing Art and Design Technology subject leadership within an SEN setting.
  • Able to demonstrate an excellent understanding of how children and young people learn and develop, and of the pastoral role in this context.
  • Highly motivated and flexible, and committed to developing own, and others’, CPD.
  • Creative, innovative and quick to learn.
  • Able to demonstrate excellent initiative and organisational skills.
  • Keen to lead, and to join, a committed, hard-working and supportive team.
  • Committed to partnership working, both within school and with outside organisations.
  • Passionate about their role in improving outcomes and life chances for children and young people with disabilities

An understanding of child development and experience of, or strongly evidenced interest in, teaching or supporting children and young people with SEN is essential - further training in aspects of Special Education will be provided, as appropriate. The school is organised in to 3 Phases (3-7, 7-14, and 14-19), has particular strengths in Communication, the Arts, PE and Sport, PSHE and Thinking Ahead (including work-related learning and careers), and a particular commitment to extra-curricular enrichment, including outdoor learning and adventure, and community visits.

What the school offers its staff

Since Oak Field is a unique specialised educational setting within the City of Nottingham, and this is a unique post, we strongly advise that before you apply for this post you have a detailed look at our website (oakfieldschool.org), especially the 4-minute video and the Learning At Home tab. Then have an informal telephone conversation with Patricia Lewis (Headteacher) or Matthew Riley (Deputy Head) between 9.30am and 5pm to find out more about the role and to arrange a visit to the school during school hours, when you will be able to spend some time in an Art lesson. We cannot stress enough how important this is, to support your application.

This post would suit an Art and Design teacher with a strongly evidenced interest in SEN; this could be an experienced teacher, or an Early Career Teacher – we are very keen to appoint the right person for this post. Please apply only if you have QTS, or will have achieved this by August 2026. Applications are welcome both from Primary and Secondary teachers – you will teach Art and Design across the school, and will be using lots of transferable skills! Please note that the post will include some cross-curricular teaching, especially in the 3-7 Phase (EYFS/KS1) and in the 6th Form. Significant experience of, and a keen interest in, Design Technology would be highly desirable, as would a commitment to embedding technology in the teaching of Art and Design, using it to drive inclusion for all pupils.
