What skills and experience we're looking for

  • Job Purpose:

  • To support the HR team in delivering an efficient and professional HR service to the school community.

  • Experience:

  • Experience of providing advice and guidance on HR related matters including employee relations, terms and conditions of employment, administering recruitment and selection processes and delivering transactional HR administration throughout the employee life cycle.

  • Proven track record of prioritising administrative workload and managing conflicting deadlines.

  • Experience of working in the education sector desirable

  • Qualifications and Knowledge:

  • Applicants should have a good standard of general education, ideally qualified to at least A level standard (or equivalent), with GCSEs in Maths and English.

  • HR Qualification (CIPD level 5 or equivalent).

  • Sound knowledge of safer recruitment, KCSIE and Single Central Register requirements.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Provision of HR advice and support

  • Provide guidance and support on employee relations issues as required; disciplinary, capability, investigations, grievances and dismissal, completing the associated paperwork where necessary.
  • Keep up to date with upcoming employment law and current case law to ensure the school meets their legal obligations for employees.
  • Support the proactive management of short and long-term absence, including referral to occupational health providers and specialists.
  • Advise on the implications of any change regarding staff pay and conditions, including enquiries related to pensions or benefit options, such as the Cycle to Work scheme or employee health care scheme.
  • Liaise with our appointed external HR advisers to ensure best practice outcomes are followed and keep up to date with upcoming employment law and current case law to ensure the school meets their legal obligations for employees.
  • Arrange and complete return to work meetings to confirm employees are fit to attend work and identify any support and adjustment required.
  • Undertake termination of employment procedures for departing employees, conducting exit interviews to gather feedback and insights to help inform retention strategies.
  • Continually revise and develop processes and support, to promote employee wellbeing.

Recruitment

  • Support the review of job descriptions and person specifications.
  • In conjunction with the HR Manager, coordinate the recruitment and selection process:

- Develop adverts and application information packs

- Liaise with applicants throughout the recruitment and selection process, answer enquiries and arrange informal visits to school

- Support the shortlisting process through the review of applications

- Devise interview schedules and arrange student panels, candidate assessments, presentations and lesson observations

- Assist in undertaking interviews for support staff vacancies as required.

  • Undertake pre-employment checks for all new staff, to include the relevant DBS checks, online checks, Right to Work, Qualifications, pre-placement medical assessment, Prohibition from Teaching and Section 128 checks as appropriate for each role.
  • Co-ordinate the process for people working on site via a Service Level Agreement, to include ensuring relevant checks are made in accordance with legislation and best practice and necessary documentation is in place.
  • Coordinate the implementation of an effective induction process for all new joiners in conjunction with the relevant line manager.
  • Coordinate the probationary policy and assessment for support staff in a timely manner, providing guidance to line managers when needed.

Pay and Benefits

  • Produce and issue annual pay statements for teaching and support staff.
  • Arrange annual increments for support staff as appropriate, and increases in salary formulae or annual leave, for individual support staff after 5 and 10 years of service.

Safeguarding and Record Keeping

  • Support the maintenance of the Single Central Register in compliance with current safer recruitment legislation and the DfE Keeping Children Safe in Education documentation.
  • Monitor and review the school’s DBS checking process, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Keep records in accordance with the school’s record retention schedule and data protection law, ensuring information security and confidentiality.

Policy Management

  • Ensure HR policies are in place in accordance with legislation and HR best practice, in liaison with the school employment law advisors.
  • Undertake policy reviews in accordance with the policy schedule, and devise new policies as required.
