Attendance Officer job summary
30 hours per week | Grade 5 | Coventry-based (primary & secondary schools) - 2 roles available
Help children be present. Help families feel supported. Help schools change outcomes.Every day a child isn’t in school, opportunities are lost. As an Attendance Officer, your work will make sure fewer days - and fewer futures - are missed.
We are looking to appoint two dedicated Attendance Officers to work across a group of primary schools and one secondary school in Coventry, supporting pupils and families where attendance is a barrier to learning. These roles are central to our pastoral teams and play a vital part in safeguarding, inclusion and improving educational outcomes.
About the roleAs an Attendance Officer, you will work directly with children, young people and their families to understand the reasons behind poor attendance and help them overcome challenges. You will:
- Support pupils whose attendance is 85% or below, or who are at risk of becoming persistently absent
- Build trusting, professional relationships with families, pupils and school staff
- Monitor attendance and punctuality, investigating unauthorised absence
- Carry out home visits, meetings and telephone contact where appropriate
- Work closely with school leaders, pastoral teams and external agencies
- Use professional judgement to escalate concerns, including formal action where required
- Contribute to wider pastoral and safeguarding support for vulnerable children
- Help schools achieve and sustain improved attendance outcomes
You’ll be part of a wider attendance team, sharing best practice and contributing to strategic attendance targets across the partnership.
Who we’re looking forYou’ll be someone who combines empathy with confidence, and understands that improving attendance is about relationships as much as rules.
You will have:
- GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Maths
- Experience working with children or young people in an education, pastoral or social care setting
- A sound understanding of school attendance expectations and safeguarding responsibilities
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to manage challenging conversations
- Confidence working independently, while being a strong team player
- The resilience, professionalism and calm approach needed in complex situations
A flexible attitude, strong organisational skills and a willingness to undertake training are essential.
Why join us?- Make a direct, visible difference to children’s lives
- Work across both primary and secondary phases, gaining valuable experience
- Be part of a supportive, values‑led team focused on inclusion and wellbeing
- Benefit from clear professional boundaries, shared practice and strong leadership support
