Autism Advisory Teacher job summary

Job Title: Autism Advisory Teacher (full time, term time only)

DoWAT Central Team: Waxwell House, Pinner (schools are located across Hertfordshire and North London and a school base will be provided)

Pay Range: up to £45k depending on experience and qualifications (fixed term for 2 years April 2025-2027 in the first instance)

Directly reporting to: DoWAT SEND Lead

Key relationships: SENCos, teachers and teaching assistants within each school.

Overall job purpose:

We are seeking to appoint an Advisory Teacher for Autism to join our newly formed central SEND team. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in providing specialised support for students with autism spectrum disorders and work collaboratively with school staff, parents, and external professionals to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Previous experience in a similar role is desirable and experience in a SEND position required.

Key Responsibilities:


1. Individualised Support:

Collaborate with teachers to identify and address the unique learning needs of students with autism.

Develop and implement personalised strategies to support academic, social, and emotional development.

2. Training and Development:

Provide training sessions for teachers, support staff, and parents on effective strategies in autism education.

Stay informed about the latest research and best practices related to autism spectrum disorders.

3. Collaboration and Consultation:

Work closely with teachers to adapt curriculum materials and teaching approaches to accommodate students with autism.

Collaborate with external specialists and other Trust professionals to ensure comprehensive and coherent support for students.

4. Assessment and Monitoring:

Conduct assessments to identify students' strengths and areas for development.

Regularly monitor and evaluate student progress, adjusting support strategies as necessary.

Provide input around targets and next steps for student support plans.

5. Advocacy and Communication:

Advocate for the needs of students with autism within the school community and external forums.

Work closely with other teachers, school staff, and specialists to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Maintain open communication with parents, providing guidance and support.

6. Sensory-Friendly Environment:

Foster the creation of a sensory-friendly learning environment, providing resources and guidance to teachers.

Promote awareness and understanding of sensory processing issues related to autism.

7. Behavioural Support and Management:

Develop and implement behavioural intervention plans to address challenging behaviours and promote positive behaviour.
