Great Yarmouth Primary Academy is looking for a reliable and conscientious Caretaker to join our team. This varied role will involve keeping our buildings and grounds well maintained, secure and ready for students and staff each day, playing an important part in the smooth running of the academy.
You’ll take pride in your work, use your practical skills and initiative to tackle the everyday challenges of a busy academy, and be an important part of a team helping to provide a safe, supportive environment where students are ready to learn.
Hours of work will be determined by the needs of the academy and agreed with the Principal. Key holder responsibilities may occasionally extend beyond regular working hours. This is a 52-week contract, with flexibility to take annual leave during school holidays.
What You’ll Be Doing
As Caretaker at Great Yarmouth Primary Academy, you will help ensure the academy is safe, secure, well-maintained and ready for students, staff and visitors each day.
Working under the direction of the Site Manager and Principal, you will support the smooth running of the premises, including site security, general maintenance and repairs, monitoring the condition of the buildings and grounds, and supporting cleaning and upkeep.
You will open and secure the academy, operate fire and burglar alarm systems and respond to emergencies when required. You will also monitor heating, lighting, plumbing and other utility systems to help maintain a safe and comfortable environment.
Your practical duties will include minor repairs, painting and decorating, moving furniture and equipment, maintaining external areas, clearing drains and gullies, replenishing sanitary supplies and supporting general cleaning. You will also help monitor cleaning and authorised contractors working on site.
You may support academy lettings by opening and securing the site, monitoring activities and acting as an emergency contact, with opportunities to drive the academy minibus.
As a key holder, you may occasionally need to respond to emergencies outside normal working hours, with any additional attendance agreed with the Principal according to academy needs.
- Maintain site security, including fire and burglar alarms, and carry out key holder duties such as locking/unlocking entrances, checking doors and windows and operating alarm systems.
- Ensure heating, lighting, plumbing, power and other utility systems operate correctly.
- Assist with the safe operation and maintenance of plant and equipment, following manufacturers’ instructions.
- Maintain sanitary conditions and undertake internal decoration and external duties, including drain clearance and general tidying.
- Follow health and safety procedures and responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
- Respond to emergencies outside normal hours and support pre-planned lettings as required.
About You:
We are looking for a practical, reliable and conscientious individual who takes pride in maintaining a safe, welcoming and well-presented environment.
You will have good DIY and practical maintenance skills, with a sound understanding of health and safety. You’ll be able to organise and prioritise your workload, use your initiative and work effectively as part of a wider team.
You’ll be approachable and able to communicate effectively with staff, students, parents, visitors, contractors and community users. You should be willing to undertake training and development and have the flexibility to respond to the varied demands of a busy academy.
You will also need to be physically able to carry out the practical aspects of the role, including lifting, carrying and moving equipment and furniture.
Essential:
- Good practical and DIY skills, with the ability to undertake minor repairs and general maintenance, and an understanding of health and safety requirements, including COSHH.
- Ability to manage your time effectively, use your initiative and prioritise your workload.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to undertake the physical requirements of the role, including lifting, carrying and moving equipment.
- Ability to carry out basic administrative tasks, including record keeping, ordering and stock taking.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- A conscientious and logical approach to varied tasks, with a commitment to maintaining the smooth running of the academy.
Desirable:
- GCSE English and Maths, or equivalent.
- Category D1 driving licence.
- Previous experience working in a similar role within an education setting.
