This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in supporting our pupils and staff by ensuring that our school sites are safe, well-maintained, and fully equipped to meet the needs of our school communities.

As Caretaker, you will take pride in maintaining a high-quality learning environment, undertaking a variety of duties ranging from routine maintenance and minor repairs to site security, health and safety checks, risk assessments, and supporting school improvement projects. Working pattern: Mon-Fri; split shift – 7:30am to 10:30am; 2:30pm to 5:30pm

While previous experience in a similar role would be advantageous, it is not essential. We welcome applications from individuals with good practical DIY and maintenance skills, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment for children. This role would particularly suit someone with experience in maintenance, facilities management, health and safety, or general building upkeep who is seeking a rewarding position that makes a genuine difference to children's lives and future opportunities.

The successful candidate will be organised, efficient, quality-focused, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team. Above all, they will be committed to helping us provide an environment where every child can thrive.

Key Responsibilities

As School Caretaker, you will be responsible for ensuring that the school environment is safe, clean, secure, properly heated, and well maintained to support effective teaching and learning. Duties will include:

  • Opening and locking school buildings as required and maintaining the overall security of the site.
  • Carrying out routine maintenance of school buildings and grounds.
  • Undertaking minor repairs and maintenance tasks, including changing light bulbs, assembling shelving, painting and decorating, and basic plumbing work.
  • Maintaining the school grounds, including grass cutting and general upkeep.
  • Assisting with cleaning duties where required.
  • Moving and transporting furniture, equipment, and deliveries around the site.
  • Monitoring and replenishing stocks of cleaning and maintenance supplies.
  • Supervising and liaising with external contractors working on site.
  • Supporting and adhering to school policies and procedures, including safeguarding and data protection requirements.
  • Contributing positively to the ethos and values of the Caister Primary Federation.
  • Carrying out any other reasonable duties commensurate with the role.

About You

Personal qualities are of paramount importance. The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Patience, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude.
  • Energy, flexibility, and reliability.
  • A good sense of humour and a willingness to help others.
  • Strong practical problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a team.

What We Offer

You will join a friendly, supportive, and committed staff team where collaboration and teamwork are highly valued. Hemsby and Rollesby Primary Schools are popular and successful schools, proudly forming part of the City2Coast Federation.

Prospective applicants are warmly encouraged to visit the schools and discuss the role with the Head of School, Donna Walker. Informal visits are most welcome. Please contact the school office in September on 01493 730364 or by emailing hos@hemsbyprimary.org.uk to arrange a suitable time.
