Caretaker job summary
The successful candidate will take responsibility for the day-to-day care, security and maintenance of our school buildings and grounds. You will work closely with the Headteacher, Office Manager and wider staff team to ensure that the school site is safe, well maintained and ready for the school day.
The role will include:
- Opening and securing the school site each day.
- Carrying out daily health and safety and site checks.
- Ensuring classrooms, communal areas and external spaces are safe and ready for use.
- Undertaking routine maintenance, repairs and basic DIY.
- Monitoring heating, lighting, water and other site systems and reporting faults.
- Maintaining the school grounds, including litter picking and basic outdoor maintenance.
- Supporting the safe operation of the school’s fire, security and emergency procedures.
- Managing deliveries and contractors attending the site.
- Maintaining appropriate records and reporting maintenance or health and safety concerns.
- Ensuring the SEN Unit and other specialist areas are maintained to a high standard.
- Supporting statutory testing and compliance arrangements.
- Moving furniture, equipment and resources when required.
- Responding appropriately to emergencies and unexpected site issues.
- Maintaining a clean, safe and welcoming environment for pupils, including those with additional needs.
We are looking for someone who is:
- Practical, dependable and well organised.
- Able to work independently and use initiative.
- Confident undertaking basic maintenance and repairs.
- Knowledgeable about health and safety and maintaining a school site.
- Reliable and able to prioritise competing demands.
- Friendly and approachable, with good communication skills.
- Able to work effectively with staff, contractors, pupils and visitors.
- Committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
- Flexible and willing to respond to the changing needs of a busy primary school.
Previous experience of working in a school or similar setting would be desirable, but we would also welcome applications from candidates with relevant premises, maintenance or facilities experience.
