Caretaker job summary

To ensure the security, care and availability of the school building, furniture, fittings and equipment; to ensure a satisfactory physical environment and to promote the efficient use of the School’s assets to support the educational objectives of the school.

The successful candidate will need to have:

good knowledge of health and safety regulations although training will be given,

the ability to work flexibly, independently and as part of a team,

basic DIY skills,

the ability to plan, organise and prioritise,

the ability to carry out general and specific cleaning duties, as directed,

- a commitment to acting with integrity, honesty, loyalty and fairness to safeguard the assets, financial probity and reputation of the school,

the ability to work under pressure and prioritise effectively,

computer knowledge,

- a commitment to maintaining confidentiality at all times and to safeguarding and equality; and

- be able to work flexibly and out of school hours as required and in agreement with the Headteacher.

Main duties & responsibilities

1. To ensure the building, contents and grounds are secured and safe.

2. To open up the school building and gates. To provide access to the building and grounds to authorised persons at all reasonable times.

3. To be aware of the physical condition of the building, furniture and equipment and take appropriate steps to ensure maintenance and repairs as necessary.

4. To carry out maintenance and repairs to the building, furniture and equipment within the scope of a competent handyman.

5. To overlook the operation of the heating and lighting systems: monitoring usage and promoting energy conservation in the school by recording meter readings monthly for electricity, gas and solar panels. Ensure the heating is to the required temperatures, timings are maintained and there is an adequate supply of hot water.

6. To test the fire alarm with a different zone area in school and record and to liaise with the Headteacher for a termly fire alarm practice.

7. To test the emergency light and make sure fire doors operate around the school.

8. Porterage duties as required and particularly the laying out of furniture and other equipment for timetabled activities without direct instruction.

9. Miscellaneous duties of a practical nature as circumstances demand, or on the request of the Headteacher or Admin Team.
