St Mary’s Community Primary School is a friendly, happy, inclusive school located just outside Dereham.   

We are looking for a friendly and reliable Caretaker to join our lovely school community. 

 

This is a vital role within our school and personal qualities are of paramount importance.  The person appointed will be expected to display:   

  • Responsible, flexible and honest; 
  • Proactive and takes pride in their work requiring minimum supervision; 
  • Has good communication skills and can work well independently and as part of a team; 
  • Has a practical, hands-on approach to basic maintenance and site duties; 
  • Is able to multi-task and work under pressure; 
  • Has the ability to prioritise effectively, meet deadlines and accept challenges. 

 

The qualifications and experience required of a Caretaker are: 

  • A good level of literacy and numeracy; 
  • Understands and complies with Health & Safety Regulations; 
  • A sound track record of work in a relevant area 

 

Duties will include, but are not limited to: 

  • Act as a key holder and ensure site security as well as dealing with minor security/safety issues; 
  • Undertake the opening up and lock up of the school; 
  • Maintaining the school grounds; 
  • Monitor cleaning standards and undertake cleaning as required; 
  • Undertake basic DIY to the level of a competent handyman; 
  • Carry out routine procedures such as replace light bulbs, batteries, change clocks; 
  • Monitor stock levels and inform line manager of requirements; 
  • Have knowledge and awareness of H&S practices and policies;  
  • Be willing to undertake training relevant to the role; 
  • Check the school site and premises regularly and ensure that all areas are safe and free from hazards, clear and grit paths and public areas when necessary; 
  • Monthly inspections & checks on school’s play equipment and repairing where possible or reporting if not; 
  • In conjunction with the Headteacher and Business Manager, attend meetings with contractors; 
  • Interact with staff, parents, pupils and visitors in a helpful and sensitive manner whilst ensuring confidential matters or sensitive material is handled appropriately; 
  • You must enjoy working in a child-orientated environment. 

 

As a term of your employment, you may reasonably be expected to perform duties of a similar or related nature to those outlined in the job description (attached). 

 

The exact working pattern will be discussed with the candidates at interview, but the hours fall with the school’s opening hours of 7.30am – 6pm
