Catering Assistant job summary
Key Responsibilities
Catering Operations
Support the school cook in the preparation and serving of meals to pupils and staff, following planned menus and portion sizes.
Help with basic food preparation tasks such as washing, peeling, and cutting ingredients under supervision.
Set up and clear down kitchen and serving areas, ensuring all equipment and utensils are clean and ready for use.
Assist with receiving and storing food deliveries, ensuring correct rotation and stock management.
Operate kitchen appliances and equipment safely and in line with school procedures.
Service Delivery
Serve meals to children in a friendly, efficient, and caring manner, promoting a calm and enjoyable dining experience.
Ensure pupils receive the correct meals, paying attention to dietary needs and allergies.
Support the smooth running of lunchtime service, including setting up and clearing dining areas.
Encourage positive behaviour and good table manners during meal service.
Communication & Reporting
Follow instructions from the school cook or kitchen supervisor accurately and promptly.
Report any concerns such as low stock levels, equipment issues, or pupil dietary concerns to the appropriate staff member.
Communicate effectively and politely with children, staff, and colleagues.
Record any necessary information, such as food temperatures or cleaning logs, as required.
Health & Safety & Hygiene
Ensure adherence to cleaning schedules and report any hazards or unfit food items.
Collaborate with leadership to comply with school health and safety standards, including maintaining COSHH documentation.
Maintain cleanliness and safety of all kitchen equipment and supplies.
Maintain high standards of personal hygiene and always wear appropriate kitchen clothing.
Keep all kitchen, food preparation, and dining areas clean and sanitised in line with food hygiene regulations.
Follow correct procedures for the safe storage, preparation, and serving of food, especially regarding allergens.
Dispose of waste correctly and ensure bins are emptied and cleaned regularly.
Other Duties
Organise and support school events, occasionally outside normal hours.
