Class Teacher - KS1 job summary

The Opportunity: Planting Seeds for the Future

At Haydon Abbey, we believe in planting the seeds and helping them grow. We are on a transformative journey toward meeting the Expected Standards of the renewed educational framework. We are looking for gardeners of potential—educators who see the hidden spark in every child and have the patience, skill, and heart to nurture it during these vital formative years.

If you have a heart for community and want to be part of a school that values growth over labels, your seat is at our table. We believe that by lifting our most vulnerable, the entire ship of our school community rises.

KS1 Specialist: Nurturing the Foundations of Learning

As a KS1 teacher at Haydon Abbey, you are the architect of a child’s fundamental academic identity. We are looking for a practitioner who can blend the magic of early discovery with the structured rigour required for Key Stage 1 success.

  • Mastery of Early Literacy & Phonics: You will deliver high-quality, systematic instruction—particularly in Phonics and early Number Sense—ensuring all children reach the Expected Standards.
  • Creating Confident Learners: You will foster a classroom culture where Year 1 and Year 2 pupils transition from play-based roots to independent learners, building the resilience to tackle new challenges.
  • The Early Intervention Edge: You will identify and close attainment gaps early, ensuring every child develops the core fluencies needed to thrive as they move through the school.

Key Responsibilities: Leading with Heart and Precision

  • Relational & Trauma-Informed Practice: Be the safe adult. Using trauma-informed strategies, you will create a classroom environment where emotional safety is the soil in which academic success grows. You will focus on the need behind the behaviour.
  • Collaborating on SEND Plans: Work in expert partnership with our SENDCo to implement and track Special Educational Needs Plans. You will ensure that support is precisely calibrated so that neurodivergent pupils flourish from the very start of their journey.
  • The Graduated Approach: Lead the Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle with diligence, ensuring no child is left behind and every child’s progress is monitored with care.
  • Specialist-Supported Teaching: Deliver an ambitious curriculum, supported by Specialist Sports Coaches and Music Specialists, allowing you to focus on the core progress and wellbeing of your class.
  • Safeguarding & Welfare: Maintain a culture of relentless vigilance. Protecting our children is our first and highest calling. You will strictly adhere to KCSIE guidelines and school safeguarding programmes.

Investing in Your Wellbeing: The Haydon Abbey Way

We believe that for our pupils to grow, our teachers must flourish. We offer a wrap-around support package modelled on professional respect:

  • Sustainable Planning: In addition to regular PPA, we provide additional PPA days at the start of every term to give you the space to plan with intentionality and calm.
  • Expert Coverage: Your PPA is covered by specialists, ensuring high-quality provision for pupils and true headspace for you.
  • Fuel for the Mission: We provide free breakfast and lunch for all staff—because a supported community eats together.
  • Bespoke Coaching: Access to CPD focused on neurodiversity, trauma-responsiveness, and the renewed framework requirements.

Are You the One?

We want to hear from you if:

  • You believe every child, regardless of their starting point or SEND status, deserves an elite education.
  • You are a specialist in early childhood development who understands the power of a strong foundation.
  • You are resilient, optimistic, and thrive on being part of a turnaround journey.
