What skills and experience we're looking for

At Sonning Common Primary School we enjoy teaching and you will too!

Come and experience life as a teacher in our large, vibrant village primary school. From September 2024 we are seeking an amazing teacher to join our team and help us to build on our successes and achieve our ambitious vision for the school.

As a teacher at Sonning Common Primary you will strive for excellence and build on the values at the heart of our school community. You will be ambitious yet nurturing, fostering a culture of openness and mutual respect. You will also set the safeguarding and welfare of our pupils as your highest priority.

The position could suite an Early Career Teacher or a more experienced teacher as we simply want to appoint the right person to fit in with us and our values. What we want in a new colleague is someone who:

  • loves working as part of a team

  • shares and lives by our values of respect, truth, kindness, doing-your-best and politeness

  • has a high level of IT competence

What the school offers its staff

The school maintained its rating of ‘Good’ by Ofsted in September 2023 and the feedback we received from our inspection was reassuring and heartwarming. Our school is truly valued by the community it serves.

The pupils at Sonning Common Primary are happy, engaged and well supported by an outstanding team of dedicated teachers and staff.

Our teachers particularly enjoy working here because the school offers:

  • a supportive board of governors, exceptional staff, an active PTA and parent community

  • kind, curious, and enthusiastic learners

  • 2-form entry so teachers have a teaching partner to share ideas with

  • weekly PPA time with the teacher in the same year group

  • an annual chance to change year groups and key-stage in order that teachers gain experience across the school

  • professional development and leadership opportunities

  • refurbished, well-resourced classrooms and an onsite library

  • an up-to-date computer suite, plus sets of laptops for most years

  • great facilities for sport including a huge field, an all-weather court, Forest School and our own swimming pool

Commitment to safeguarding

Sonning Common Primary is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This post involves the type of work with children and young people that requires applicants to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service check and appropriate Right to Work clearances in line with our recruitment and selection practices. The possession of a criminal record will not necessarily prevent an applicant from obtaining this post. All users are considered confidentially and according to the nature of the role and information disclosed.

Sonning Common Primary School is a values-led community, set in a beautiful rural site in South Oxfordshire.  We focus on our five values - Kindness, Politeness, Respect, Truth, and Doing your best – in everything we do.  We hope that this results in happy, productive children.  The school is set in vast rural grounds, with two large playing fields, two playgrounds, a full-size all-weather sports facility, and two forest camps.  We also have an on-site swimming pool.

Children at Sonning Common are taught by a diverse and committed teaching body, many of whom have experience in other careers and who can bring a varied range of views and ideas to inspire their classes.  Our results are consistently good, but we also aim to develop children more widely into responsible citizens, whose personal values reflect those of the school.  We always teach the full primary curriculum, and lessons and assemblies are enhanced by visits and visitors, our on-site public library, our garden and allotment, our sports and drama facilities and our forest camps.  We believe that all children leave us with a rounded and informed view of the world.  The achievements of our pupils in sport, music and drama are testament to this, as are the range of secondary schools they are able to move on to.

At Sonning Common we have a reputation for supporting all children, from extending the learning for those who are highly able to providing expert support for those with special educational needs, with both of these achieved through dedicated staff and tailored interventions.  Our pastoral support is superb, driven by a shared ethos that no child can learn effectively if they are anxious or unhappy.  Our wrap-around care (7.30am – 6.00pm) is always run by our own staff, and offers a range of activities and home-cooked healthy food.
