Join Our Caring and Nurturing Outstanding Infant School 

We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated and resilient 1:1 Classroom Assistant (Special Educational Needs) to join our friendly team and provide individual support for a child with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). 

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about helping children overcome barriers to learning and thrive both academically and emotionally within a supportive infant school environment. 

This role is initially fixed term for after the half term start, or ASAP. 

The Role 

The successful candidate will: 

  • initially provide dedicated 1:1 support for a pupil with SEMH and ASD needs for 2 to 3 days a week and support within our ESP, or with another child for the other 2 days 
  • Build a positive, trusting relationship to support emotional wellbeing, communication and engagement in learning. 
  • Implement personalised strategies to help the child regulate emotions and access the curriculum. 
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENDCo and external professionals to deliver consistent support. 
  • Promote positive behaviour, social interaction and independence. 
  • Support sensory regulation and respond effectively to changing needs throughout the school day. 
  • Encourage participation in learning and play activities both indoors and outdoors. 
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to reviews and meetings where required. 
  • Work with children across the infant school (reception to year 2) to support high SEND needs. 

We Are Looking For Someone Who: 

  • Has experience working with children with SEMH, ASD and/or additional learning needs. 
  • Is patient, empathetic and able to remain calm in challenging situations. 
  • Has a good understanding of autism and strategies that support communication, sensory needs and emotional regulation. 
  • Is physically fit, active and able to keep pace with a young child who may require support during outdoor learning, physical activities and movement breaks throughout the day. 
  • Can adapt quickly, use their initiative and demonstrate a flexible approach. 
  • Has excellent communication and teamwork skills. 
  • Is flexible and adaptable. 
  • Is committed to inclusion and ensuring every child reaches their potential. 

Desirable Qualifications and Experience 

  • Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent). 
  • Experience supporting children with SEMH and ASD in an educational setting. 
  • Training in therapeutic approaches, nurture principles, trauma-informed practice, Team Teach or positive behaviour support strategies, steps trained.
