What skills and experience we're looking for
Herefordshire Pupil Referral Service (HPRS) is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Construction Instructor to deliver high‑quality practical construction training to Key Stage 4 learners. This is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference to young people who benefit from an alternative approach to education, helping them build confidence, skills and pathways into the construction industry.
Role responsibilities include:
- Delivering engaging, practical lessons within our fully equipped workshop.
- Preparing lesson materials and providing resources to support learning.
- Providing feedback on student work, evidencing progress and achievement.
- Embedding literacy, numeracy and core employability skills within your teaching.
- Maintaining accurate records to track/report on student progress.
- Supervising learners, ensuring compliance with health and safety and safeguarding procedures.
- Supporting students pastorally, promoting welfare, motivation and engagement.
- Participating in the wider school activities aligned with HPRS’s ethos and values.
Candidates will also need to:
- Improve pupil’s confidence, motivation, social skills and relationships, enabling them to face new and challenging situations.
- Help pupils overcome barriers to learning.
- Be an excellent classroom practitioner.
- Work on your own initiative.
- Be a good timekeeper, flexible, accommodating and a team player.
- Good sense of humour.
The ideal candidate will be appropriately qualified (minimum of Level 2 Diploma/NVQ in carpentry, brickwork, plumbing, electrical installation, etc.) and have relevant industry experience. Those without teaching experience, but a willingness to train towards, are welcome to apply.

Herefordshire Pupil Referral Service (HPRS) provides education to pupils unable to attend mainstream school for various reasons. The service is currently split over three sites located within Hereford – St David’s Centre (KS4), The Aconbury Centre (KS3) and H3 (Hospital, Home, Hub Teaching Team).
HPRS provides a safe, secure and welcoming learning environment in which young people can grow as responsible, independent and self-confident learners. The service benefits from a supportive Management Committee and Senior Leadership Team and a dynamic team of experienced, committed staff.
