Cover Supervisor job summary

The Cover Supervisor in a primary school plays an important role in maintaining continuity of learning when the class teacher is absent. Their core responsibility is to deliver pre‑planned learning activities under the professional direction and supervision of the class teacher, ensuring pupils remain engaged and purposeful throughout the lesson. They supervise whole classes, promote positive behaviour, respond to pupils’ general questions, and support inclusion so that all children can access the learning activities provided. Cover Supervisors also act as positive role models, maintain high expectations of conduct, and provide the class teacher with feedback on broad issues such as pupil behaviour or lesson engagement. Through this supportive role, they help ensure the smooth running of the school day and contribute to a stable, safe and effective learning environment for all pupils.
