Curriculum Leader, English (TLR1) job summary

We are seeking a highly ambitious, committed, and dynamic professional to join our English department as a Curriculum Leader.

The successful candidate will:

• Deliver engaging, differentiated lessons that build on prior knowledge and meet individual needs.
• Mentor and support colleagues, sharing expertise to raise the quality of teaching across the department.
• Promote reflective practice and adapt teaching to meet emerging needs.
• Have extensive experience teaching English at KS3, KS4, and KS5.
• Lead a large teaching team to deliver strong outcomes for pupils.

The English department comprises of thirteen qualified teachers including the Academy Principal and the Secondary Headteacher. We work collaboratively to provide a broad, ambitious, and unique curriculum to all learners. English offers a broad, ambitious and knowledge-rich curriculum that enables all students to develop as confident, analytical and articulate readers, writers and speakers. At Key Stage 3, students explore a diverse range of literary texts, genres and themes while building secure foundations in reading, writing, grammar and spoken language through a carefully sequenced curriculum. Lessons encourage critical thinking, creativity and thoughtful discussion, enabling students to analyse language and ideas, develop their own voice as writers, and communicate with clarity and confidence. Through rich and engaging learning experiences, students develop resilience, intellectual curiosity and a lifelong appreciation of the power of language and literature.

At Key Stage 4, students follow a three-year GCSE English programme, beginning in Year 9 and culminating in GCSE examinations at the end of Year 11. All students are entered for both GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature, enabling them to develop strong analytical, communication and critical thinking skills through the study of a wide range of literary and non-fiction texts. Throughout the course, students are regularly assessed through classwork, extended writing, end-of-unit assessments and Pre-Public Examinations (PPEs), allowing teachers to monitor progress closely and provide targeted support where required.

Students are placed in teaching groups based on a range of evidence, including classwork, assessment outcomes, attainment data and professional judgement. This approach ensures that students are appropriately supported and challenged, enabling them to maximise their progress and achievement in English.

In the Years 12 and 13, students can continue their study of English through A Level English Language and Literature. The course develops students' understanding of how language shapes meaning, identity and culture while fostering sophisticated critical analysis, independent thinking and academic writing.

The successful applicant will be passionate about teaching and learning, have a desire and an eagerness to contribute to the subject area.
