Deputy Head of English

An exceptional opportunity for a forward-thinking Deputy Head of English has arisen.

Our School

The Gatwick School is an all-through school to Year 11, located just a few minutes south of London Gatwick Airport.

Founded in 2014, our school is part of the Aurora Academies Trust, and has approximately 400 students in primary and 600 in the secondary phase.

Under new leadership since September 2023, the school has ambitious plans for creating the best possible experience for our students, equipping them with all the skills they need for success, both now and in the future. We want all students and staff to be proud members of our TGS family.

At its core, The Gatwick School stands as two small schools, one BIG family. We believe in providing students with chances and choices, and a truly unique culture of inclusivity and ambition, which enables all to thrive. In this culture, all members of the TGS will have more chances, so they can have more choices in their future.

We are excited to welcome applications from English teachers to join a supportive department where they can thrive and progress their careers.

Commitment to safeguarding

Our whole school approach to safeguarding is based upon an understanding of the local context and an attitude of ‘it could happen here’. The Gatwick School uses the 3 ‘C’s’ – Character, Culture and Currency to promote our inclusive ethos, including our approach to safeguarding.

Our pupils’ welfare is our paramount concern. Our school is a community and all those directly connected, staff, volunteers, IEB members, parents, families and pupils, have an essential role to play in making it safe and secure.

About The Gatwick School

School type
Free School, ages 4 to 16
School size
885 pupils enrolled
Age range
4 to 16

The Gatwick School has been set up to establish an All-through school for children aged 4 to 16.

All-through state schools are rare but we feel that it is precisely what gives The Gatwick School a unique place in the local provision for schools.

Here are some of the reasons why we think an all-through education is so valuable and why we think it provides an exciting opportunity for our children:

It removes the well-researched performance ‘dip’ at age 11

It removes the learning barriers and age-old fears that many children face as they leave primary school and make the transition to a secondary school

It enables primary aged children to benefit from having some specialist teaching at an early age, which means that gifted and talented children will be challenged and stretched

It enables some children to benefit by having more time to develop their skills

It enables older children to have the opportunity to develop leadership skills by mentoring younger children (which in turn promotes a healthy and positive school climate)

Older And Younger Children Working Together

Since we have been open, it has been special to see so many and varied interactions which have led to very positive relationships being forged between our Primary and Secondary pupils.

House competitions provide opportunities for older pupils to support our younger pupils. Our primary phase sports days are run by teachers and our pupil leaders

Secondary pupils regularly visit Primary classes during special school events and drop down activities. This has inspired our Primary children to demonstrate greater confidence in reading and oral expression
