Deputy Head of Sixth Form job summary

In preparation for our continued expansion with the addition of our Sixth Form from September 2004, we are seeking a Deputy Head of Sixth Form to work closely with our Sixth Form Manager to support our Head of Sixth Form with the pastoral function of our Sixth Form. The role will focus on establishing high standards of achievement, behaviour, attendance and personal development for all students across KS5 year groups.

Please refer to the attached Job Description and Person Specification for further details on what the role encompasses. However, key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the Head of Sixth Form in raising standards of student attainment and achievement.
  • Keeping abreast of developments in post-16 education.
  • Contributing to Sixth Form development planning. Managing and leading on the work of the Sixth Form Tutor Team.
  • Supporting the Head of Sixth Form in monitoring mechanisms of Sixth Form provision to ensure excellent standards of learning, progress and pastoral care.
  • Ensuring that matters relating to KS5 year groups are clearly communicated and well-publicised.
  • Addressing the needs of students who require help to overcome barriers to achievement, both inside and outside of school, enabling them to reach their full potential.
  • Dealing with student issues as they arise by supervising students and communicating any actions required to relevant staff and/or parents/carers.
  • Maintaining regular contact with the families/carers of students in need of extra support, keeping them informed of students’ progress and needs.
  • Assisting, engaging and supporting with student attendance, including liaison with external agencies as required.
  • Promoting and developing the school’s Behaviour Policy, ensuring that Sixth Form tutors understand, and are actively implementing, key aspects of this policy together with other related school policies.
  • Checking and commenting on all reports for KS5 year groups
  • Monitoring the progress of students who fall into identified vulnerable groups
  • Investigating poor behaviour referrals, including liaison with the Head of Sixth Form on matters that are sufficiently serious (and/or Headteacher in extreme cases), making use of sanctions and follow-up strategies, keeping relevant written records and informing parents as appropriate.
  • Promoting engagement among students with the range of enrichment opportunities on offer at the school, including playing a key role in the running of period 7 for Sixth Form students.
  • Supporting students in securing their next best destination, including involvement in the UCAS application process.
  • Providing targeted support relating to the safeguarding of Sixth Form students

Katherine Warington School is a new comprehensive, co‐educational and non‐denominational academic secondary school (opened September 19) with 750 students currently (180 in each of years 7, 8, 9 and 10 – these year groups are already oversubscribed). The school will add a
further 180 students in each subsequent year and then open a 250 strong Sixth Form. By 2025 we will have grown to our capacity of 1,150 students. The school was established through the partnership of the Harpenden Secondary Schools Trust, which includes the three outstanding
schools in Harpenden: Roundwood Park, St George’s and Sir John Lawes and additional partners: the University of Hertfordshire and Rothamsted Research Centre (a world leading non‐profit agricultural science research centre).
