Deputy Headteacher job summary

We are seeking aDeputy Headteacherwho has the passion, drive and enthusiasm to build and develop the schools' existing strengths and values and with aspirations to become a Headteacher within the Good Shepherd Trust. To lead, motivate, develop and inspire a school community that is committed to giving the children the best education and preparation to fulfil their full potential.

The successful candidate will work with the Executive Headteacher to improve outcomes for children within Surrey Hills All Saints Primary / St John’s C of E Primary schools..

Job purpose

The Deputy Headteacher, under the direction of the Executive Headteacher, will take a major role in:

Formulating the aims and objectives of the school

Establishing policies for achieving these aims and objectives

Managing staff and resources to that end

Monitoring progress towards the achievement of the school’s aims and objectives

If the Executive Headteacher is absent, the Deputy Headteacher will deputise and to fulfil the professional responsibilities of a Headteacher, as set out in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD).

Key responsibilities

Formulating the aims and objectives of the school.

Establishing policies for achieving these aims and objectives.

Managing staff and resources to that end.

Monitoring progress towards the achievement of the school’s aims and objectives.

Determine the strategic development of special educational needs (SEN) policy and provision in the school.

Be responsible for day-to-day operation of the SEN policy and co-ordination of specific provision to support individual pupils with SEN or a disability.

Take responsibility for safeguarding and child protection across the school (including online safety). Taking part in strategy discussions and inter-agency meetings and contribute to the assessment of children.

Areas of Responsibility:

Strategic direction and development of the school

Support the vision, ethos and policies of the school/GST and promote high levels of achievement.

Support the creation and implementation of the school improvement plan within the national and local context, and to take sole responsibility for appropriately delegated aspects of it.

Support all staff in achieving the priorities and targets which the school sets for itself, and to provide them with support and guidance in implementing schemes of work.

Support the evaluation of the effectiveness of the school’s policies and developments with particular emphasis on the School Self Evaluation Form.

Ensure that parents are well informed about the school curriculum, its targets, children’s attainment, and their part in the process of improvement.

Enable the views of both parents and children to be heard and considered.

To promote opportunities for networking with other schools

Teaching and learning

Take responsibility for the development and monitoring of a core area or curriculum area(s) or whole school curriculum aspect(s), as agreed from time to time.

Support the Executive Headteacher in the monitoring of the quality of teaching and children’s achievement, including the analysis of performance data.

Support the Executive Headteacher in developing links with parents, other schools, educational institutions and the wider community, including business and industry, in order to enhance teaching and learning and children’s personal development.

Conduct home/pre-school visits as well as visits to other educational establishments where the need arises with the authorisation of the Executive Headteacher.

Learning and managing staff

Support the Executive Headteacher in developing positive working relationships with and between all staff and provide and sustain motivation.

Lead groups of staff in developmental activities, delegate appropriately and evaluate outcomes.

Support the Executive Headteacher in the implementation of the school’s Performance Management/ Appraisal policies.

Effective development of staff and resources

Support the Executive Headteacher in the appointment, deployment, and development of staff to make the most effective use of their skills, expertise and experience and to ensure that all staff have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities.

Manage the school effectively in the absence of the Executive Headteacher.

Support the Executive Headteacher in the management and organisation of relevant groupings of children to ensure effective teaching and learning takes place and that children’s personal development needs are met.

Work with the Executive Headteacher and local committee in establishing priorities for expenditure and monitoring the effectiveness of spending and usage of resources with a view to achieving value for money.

General

Act as “critical friend” and provide effective professional challenge and support to the Executive Headteacher.

Provide information and advice to the Executive Headteacher and local committee and support proper accountability processes throughout the school.

Promote equal opportunities within the school.

Take on specific tasks related to the day-to-day administration and organisation of the school.

Liaise with PTFA in the organisation of school events.

Specific responsibilities - DSL

Act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead, ensuring that staff are kept informed and up to date in all matters relating to safeguarding.

Take lead responsibility for safeguarding and child protection across the school (including online safety). Take part in strategy discussions and inter-agency meetings and contribute to the assessment of children.

Advise and support other members of staff on child welfare, safeguarding and child protection matters and liaise with the relevant agencies such as the police.

School specific responsibilities and tasks

Take on any additional responsibilities which might be determined from time to time.

This job description may be amended at any time following discussion between the Executive Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher and will be reviewed annually.
