EAL Teaching Assistant job summary

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide English language support to pupils for whom English is an Additional Language, both in class and through targeted small group or one-to-one interventions.
  • Support newly arrived pupils and their families, helping them to settle into school and providing appropriate pastoral support.
  • Participate in the admissions process for new EAL pupils, including carrying out initial language assessments and sharing information with staff.
  • Work closely with teachers to plan lessons and develop resources that meet the needs of EAL learners.
  • Deliver targeted language support to develop pupils' speaking, listening, reading and writing skills across the curriculum.
  • Monitor, assess and record pupils' progress using the school's EAL assessment framework.
  • Build positive relationships with parents and carers, maintaining effective communication regarding pupils' progress and wellbeing.
  • Support colleagues in developing their understanding of the linguistic, cultural and religious backgrounds of EAL pupils.
  • Promote positive behaviour, and encourage pupils to engage confidently in all aspects of school life.
  • Work collaboratively with staff to ensure every pupil has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
