Early Years HLTA job summary

To take a lead role in the planning, delivery and assessment of learning within our internal Early Years/KS1 Inclusion Classroom, designed to support pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) through a bespoke and specialist curriculum.

To contribute to the development and ongoing success of this provision, working in close partnership with the Reception class teacher, SENCo, and other Early Years staff

To deliver high-quality teaching and intervention, supporting the holistic development of pupils with additional needs within a nurturing and inclusive environment.

To support the development of other TAs / Inclusion support staff, and direct their activities, working in close partnership with the Reception class teacher, SENCo, and other Early Years staff

To act as lead practitioner in the main Reception class at least one day per week, covering in the absence of the class teacher and ensuring continuity of learning and routines.

Planning and Teaching

  • Support and lead the delivery of a tailored, play-based Early Years curriculum in the Inclusion Classroom, aligned to the EYFS framework and individual EHCP outcomes.
  • Plan small group and individual learning opportunities under the guidance of the Reception teacher and SENCo.
  • Lead whole class sessions when required, particularly when covering teacher absence in the main Reception classroom.
  • Use knowledge of SEND and Early Years pedagogy to adapt and personalise learning materials and environments.
  • Foster a calm, structured and supportive learning atmosphere that promotes emotional regulation, sensory integration and developmental progress.

Assessment and Record Keeping

  • Observe, assess and record pupil progress, feeding into wider EYFS assessments and reporting requirements.
  • Contribute to the setting, reviewing and evaluating of APDR (Assess, Plan, Do, Review) cycles for pupils with additional needs.
  • Support the monitoring and recording of progress against EHCP targets and individual learning plans.

Leadership and Development of Provision

  • Take a proactive role in the ongoing development of the Inclusion Classroom, working with senior staff to refine routines, learning environments, and curriculum approaches.
  • Support the transition and integration of pupils into other EY/KS1 classrooms where appropriate.
  • Assist in the preparation and maintenance of learning areas and resources to support independent exploration and sensory regulation.

Support for Pupils

  • Establish positive and supportive relationships with all pupils, with a particular focus on those with SEND and communication needs.
  • Support pupils in developing independence, communication and social interaction skills.
  • Apply effective behaviour regulation strategies, underpinned by trauma-informed and inclusive practice.

To provide personal/hygiene support to pupils as required by personal plans.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Liaise with families and external professionals as needed, promoting clear communication and inclusive partnership.
  • Attend planning and review meetings as required, including those linked to EHCPs and multi-agency working.
  • Engage actively in CPD opportunities to build expertise in SEND, Early Years education and specialist intervention approaches.
  • Model the school’s values and contribute positively to our ethos of “learning and growing together to be the best that we can be.”

Support for others

The post has some responsibility for others, through demonstrating good practice, guiding/advising and directing other staff/volunteers who support teaching and learning.

Other

The post has no direct responsibility for financial resources, though could be involved in occasional handling small amounts of cash, processing cheques, invoices, etc.

The post has some direct responsibility for physical resources, including safe/secure record keeping and maintenance and management of learning resources.

To cover classes at short notice as directed by the Headteacher.

To attend staff meetings and relevant CPD.

To undertake first aid training and provide first aid cover.

To keep informed of school policy and updated information.

To participate in the performance review system for your designate.

To provide midday supervision of pupils, including supervision of the dining room and playground, and promotion of positive play activities under the supervision of the senior midday supervisor.
