Exam Invigilator job summary

To assist the Examinations Officer in the administration and invigilation of examinations, ensuring all assessments are conducted in accordance with current JCQ/ICE regulations, and that examination rooms, materials and procedures support a calm and compliant testing environment.

Role details

  • Role: Exam Invigilator
  • Grade: Grade 3, SCP 5
  • Hours: Variable (casual)
  • Reports to: Exams Officer / Senior Invigilator

Exam periods: GCSEs (May-June) and mock exams (typically November and February)

Key responsibilities

  • Complete required invigilator training and remain up to date with JCQ and examination board regulations.
  • Prepare examination venues, including room set-up, materials and equipment.
  • Supervise candidates quietly and attentively, ensuring regulations on conduct and communication are strictly followed.
  • Distribute and collect examination papers and materials, maintaining accurate timekeeping and clear instructions to candidates.
  • Respond appropriately to candidate queries in line with regulations and report incidents immediately.
  • Support candidates who require access arrangements (e.g., reading or scribing) when directed.
  • Maintain examination room standards before, during and after sessions, including sorting completed scripts for dispatch.

Qualifications

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above in English and Maths (desirable).

Experience

  • Experience in an education setting is advantageous but not essential.

Skills and attributes

  • Strong communication, organisation and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a close-knit team.
  • Flexible, adaptable and able to remain focused for extended periods.
  • Physical ability to patrol examination rooms and stand for periods as required.
  • Clear understanding of examination regulations and the importance of compliance.
