Executive Headteacher job summary

Derwent Primary School is an expanding school with a brand new building in the heart of Central Bedfordshire’s countryside close to the villages of Lower Stondon and Henlow. It has recently been converted from a one-form lower school with a pre-school into a two-form primary school with two pre-school classes. A multi-million-pound building project is to be completed in the coming Autumn term. This will increase the school footprint to 16 classrooms, including a dedicated SEN room, a food technology room along with a new library, expanded hall and extended office spaces. Derwent is located next to RAF Henlow and some of our pupils are from military families.

Southill Lower School is a small village school with a thatched roof. It is in an idyllic setting on grounds owned by Southill Estate. Southill has a 0.5 PAN, and the children are taught in mixed classes. The school has an immediate focus on the needs of the local community and is planned to transition to Primary status in 2025.

As Executive Headteacher, you will have the opportunity to lead both schools to achieve their ambitions as they complete the transition from Lower to Primary. You will be responsible for managing pupils, staff and premises with the aim of building a secure foundation from which to achieve high standards in all areas of the school’s work. To succeed, you must unite our supportive parents, dedicated teachers, and a hands-on governing body, inspiring them to realise your aims and vision. Community spirit is strong so you can expect solid local support, plus the chance to engage with and mentor other members of the area’s teaching community. Our schools possess the drive to boost their current ‘Good’ Ofsted rating to ‘Outstanding’.

You should be determined, enthusiastic and committed to bringing improvements in all aspects of the federation. Above all, you’ll be visible and approachable, with the power to influence and inspire your team. If you have experience of being a Head or Senior Leader with a teaching qualification and the ability to plan for the long-term future of the schools, we would like to hear from you.

CVs will not be accepted in lieu of a completed application pack.

The schools are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all staff to share this commitment. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and a criminal records check with the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS).
