Job summary

We seek to appoint a qualified and specialist teacher of Physical Education from April 2021. This post is suitable for a newly qualified teacher as well as those with experience. Note: In accordance with the Equality Act 2010. It is a genuine occupational requirement that the post holder is a female. This post is to provide maternity cover for a possible 12 months or until the post holder returns.

The successful applicant would be able to teach Key Stage 3 & Key Stage 4 core PE, level 2 GCSE PE, Sports Studies and A level PE. You will join a strong and very committed PE team of seven specialist teachers. The department offers an excellent range of PE provision both within the curriculum and as part of an extensive of extra-curricular programme.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute fully to the existing extra-curricular clubs and fixtures, and have the drive to expand these opportunities further. Our facilities include a newly built modern sports hall, gymnasium, weights room, extensive grass pitches and hardstanding, floodlit outdoor areas providing netball courts as well as use of an off-site swimming pool and squash courts.

• be an inspirational classroom teacher who is dedicated to provide high quality teaching and learning.
• drive students to raise standards to achieve at all levels; and

About Backwell School

Backwell School is a large, vibrant, very popular mixed comprehensive school situated in Backwell, North Somerset, about 6 miles south of Bristol. Backwell School is a part of the Lighthouse Schools Partnership Multi-Academy Trust. In 2020, Ofsted judged both the School and the Sixth Form to be ‘Good’. At present, the School has 1,700 students in Years 7 to 11 and 380 in the Sixth Form.

Our Trust values excellence and collaboration and has a key focus on staff development will deliver exciting and effective learning to our children and young people. Backwell School also leads the North Somerset Teaching Alliance (NSTA) program for trainee teaching staff.

Backwell School became an academy in 2011 and joined the Lighthouse Schools Partnership (LSP) multi-academy trust in January 2018. The LSP currently consists of two other large local secondary school as well as many primary schools in the local area. We have strong links with colleagues in the Trust which allows us to create CPD, collaboration and information sharing opportunities.

Backwell School is situated in an attractive semi-rural location to the south of Bristol. Backwell itself is a village with a strong sense of community and the school is located next door to the leisure centre with swimming pool. Other nearby towns include Nailsea, Yatton and Portishead (listed in the top 10 suburbs in the UK) and staff live in locations such as these or in Bristol itself. The South West is a beautiful part of the world with excellent links to London and the North. Devon, Cornwall and Wales are within easy reach and Bristol Airport is only 3 miles from Backwell.
