Salary will be paid in accordance with the United Learning Teachers’ Pay Scale from £36,400 to £53,040 per annum FTE, depending on previous years’ experience.
A Head of Department allowance of £4209.00 will be payable in addition
We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a passionate and ambitious teacher to join our school as Head of Business Studies and Economics from January 2027. Leading a successful department with a history of strong outcomes, you will play a key role in shaping the future of Business and Economics education within our school. This role would suit an exceptional classroom teacher ready for their first leadership position, as well as an experienced Head of Department looking for a fresh opportunity to make a lasting impact on students, colleagues, and the wider school community.
Our ideal candidate will bring energy, creativity, and deep subject expertise to inspire learners at every stage, from early confidence-building to stretching the most able, ensuring that students achieve excellence at both GCSE and A Level. Above all, they will share our belief that every student deserves extraordinary opportunities, both in and beyond the classroom.
As a key member of our middle leadership team, the Head of Business Studies and Economics will be at the heart of shaping our school’s academic vision. You will collaborate closely with senior leaders and the pastoral team, guiding a talented department and cultivating an environment where staff feel valued, supported, and empowered to deliver exceptional teaching. You will lead with clarity and purpose, ensuring that high-quality pedagogy, innovation, and inclusion underpin everything we do.
We are seeking a leader with a proven record of outstanding classroom practice and strong academic outcomes, someone who is ambitious not only for themselves, but for every student and every colleague they lead. The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker who is passionate about curriculum design, determined to raise aspirations, and committed to ensuring that Business Studies and Economics are subjects in which all students can thrive.

William Hulme’s Grammar School is the second most over-subscribed school in Manchester and one of the most successful comprehensive schools in the country. WHGS is an all-through (3-18) Academy of over 1450 pupils with a wide range of abilities, ethnicities and backgrounds.
The Academy has a relatively new Sixth Form Centre, a two-form entry Primary Phase and has specialist rooms in the Secondary Phase, including fully equipped science labs, a library, ICT resource centre, music practice rooms, design, technology and art rooms. There is also a sports hall with changing facilities, along with full kitchen and dining facilities in the Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form.
Inspectors judged the school to be Good in all phases in its most recent inspection, May 2019
