What skills and experience we're looking for

For September 2026 we are looking to appoint a Head of Department who can lead the delivery of core PE at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 as well as GCSE PE and A Level PE. It is essential that the successful candidate is passionate about PE and has excellent subject and curriculum knowledge. We are looking for an enthusiastic leader who can ensure that all students understand the relevance and importance of PE in today’s world as well as in their own lives and who can lead this successful department into the future. PE is taught in mixed ability classes, so the successful candidate will need to be experienced in adaptive teaching, but also not be afraid to take risks and embed a culture of dynamic and creative lessons across the department. You will need to be able to work collaboratively as part of a team and be willing to embed new ideas and approaches to teaching and learning, as well as making wider contributions to the school community.

What the school offers its staff

“A mindbogglingly good, state comprehensive. Proving that consistent, well-managed, well-resourced, well-delivered and kind education for all can, and does, make a difference to a community.” (The Good Schools Guide, 2025)

The King's School is an 11-18 comprehensive school, which takes great pride in the promotion of excellence in teaching and learning, pastoral care and extra-curricular activities. Our core purpose of 'Achievement for All' encourages every student to develop their skills, interests and talents, not just through academic achievement but also through a rich variety of enrichment opportunities including house competitions, extra-curricular clubs, trips and visits.
