Head of Post 16 Department
Job Purpose
To assist the Head Teacher in the leadership and management of teaching and learning in the school, to achieve the outcomes required by Government regulations and the school improvement plan adopted by the Board of Trustees and the Local Governing Body. Develop high quality of teaching and learning ethos within Post 16. Provide an excellent provision for learners with SEND.
All specifications and duties of the Head of Post 16 can be reviewed at any time and amended with consultation with the post holder and under the Head Teacher approval.
Role specific responsibilities
Responsible for the implementation of the curriculum, monitoring of delivery, assessment, recording and data analysis within the Post 16 provision.
Establish firm links with Specialist Support Service and other professional colleagues in order that our learners receive their full entitlement.
Co-ordinate links with parents/carers to support the delivery of the curriculum and to assist parents to ensure that a consistent approach is maintained both at school and within the home. Co-ordinate a social calendar to encourage parental liaison through a variety of provision that may include coffee mornings, special assemblies and workshops, designed to enhance the learning of our learners.
Ensure that appropriate communication strategies are in place across the Post 16 provision, through close liaison with all professionals and parents.
To undertake a teaching timetable commitment across the Post 16 provision or wider school as appropriate.
Support teachers and other classroom staff to deliver outstanding teaching and learning
Ensure that the behaviour management within Post 16 is in line with our overall behaviour management strategy and ethos. Ensure that both learners and staff are safe and listened to with high level of care. Improve behaviour for learning and inclusion for all learners in within the Post 16 provision.
Ensure that safeguarding procedures are followed consistently across the Post 16 provision. Ensure that learners are safe and well looked after at any times (intimate care, break, lunch, specialist interventions, in class).
Support the DSL with delivering an excellent provision in terms of learners’ safety and wellbeing.
Develop excellent pastoral care and teaching and learning provision for the Post 16 provision.
To oversee the management of the Post 16 bursary
To organise and oversee the Post 16 leavers celebration
To oversee the management, delivery and QA of accreditation within Post 16
Contribute to the formulation of the school’s vision for Post 16 improvement
Bring innovation and creativity to all areas of Post 16 provision
Further develop opportunities for community experience, work experience and work related learning
Support and implement the Preparing for Adulthood agenda in all aspects of Post 16 provision
Professional Duties
- To develop and implement policies for Post 16 which reflect the school’s commitment to high achievement and effective teaching and learning
- To attend extended SLT meetings when required and make contributions to whole school strategic direction and development
- To create a climate which enables other staff to maintain positive attitudes to the specific needs of our learners
- To ensure learners taught make progress equivalent to or better than expected on the basis of prior attainment data
- To ensure that learners’ progress is monitored and that appropriate measures are taken to address under achievement of groups and individuals
- To ensure that work with learners underpins and promotes the schools ethos and values and reflects “helping children achieve more” priorities
- To ensure that within classes each learner has an appropriate personalised curriculum promoting progression
- To ensure effective learning takes place through consistent high quality teaching and innovative practice
- To work in partnership with medical, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and other specialists within and outside the school.
- To liaise in a professional manner with parents, carers and any external agencies involved with the learners.
- To ensure that evidence of progress are co-ordinated for each learner.
- To ensure that Annual Review procedures are fully met.
- To support the leadership team to deliver the Academy Development Plan effectively and support school improvement.
- To assist in the formulation of the schools overall aims and objective and their implementation
- To meet regularly with the senior management team to discuss matters of policy and development.
- To assist the head teacher in the short listing and interviewing of prospective candidates as requested.
- Work closely with middle leaders (TLR holders) to develop teaching and learning, learner progress, learner wellbeing and safety.
- To support the pastoral team to enhance the Academy early help provision.
- To manage issues with learners on site after school.
- To continuously manage and improve Post 16 lunch time and break time provision
- To manage all staff in Post 16 provision to work effectively in line with the code of conduct and safer working practice. Be part and support the appraisal process.
- To manage the Post 16 resources (staff, budget, T&L resources, etc.) fairly, efficiently and in line with the trust policies.
- To support staff wellbeing and mental health and effective integration of new starters (staff)
- To support the management of staff absences (cover)
- To ensure that the Post 16 learning environment is safe, simulating and conducive to learning
- To support learners and their families in preparation for transition to their next stage of education or adult life
Learner progress
- Scrutinise performance data and analyse progress across the curriculum of groups and individuals against expectation
- Highlight positive performance and reward learners appropriately
- Identify under performance and establish underlying causes
- Instigate measures to address the causes of identified under performance and monitor effectiveness
- Monitor learners’ progress in terms of personal development and implement measures to address any identified concerns
- To ensure that learners who can access accreditations and perform well against standards and their potential
- Ensure that effective induction procedures are followed to ensure newly admitted learners can optimise their learning potential
- Work closely with the Designated Senior Teacher for looked after children / children in care to ensure that these learners receive the best possible support.
Attitudes to learning
- Monitor behaviour and implement behaviour plans as appropriate for individuals and groups in all areas of the curriculum and outside. This includes the classroom areas and other environments.
- Promote positive attitudes to learning to enhance behaviour for learning.
- Establish and maintain a culture of professional development within the Post 16 team, setting an example as the lead learner
- Promote British values within Post 16 for both staff and leaners
Teaching and learning
- Undertake teaching (timetabled) within Post 16 and occasionally across other areas of the school
- Plan lessons and sequences of lessons ensuring learning is personalised to meet individual learning needs
- Utilise a range of augmentative communication strategies as appropriate to the needs of individual learners
- Utilise a range of appropriate teaching strategies to ensure that lessons have pace and variety
- Ensure that teaching reflects the diversity of backgrounds and needs of learners and promotes mutual respect and British values
- Ensure that assessment and attainment data informs teaching
- Take responsibility for personal continuing professional development
- To ensure that knowledge and skills are kept up to date
- Contribute to the sharing of good practice and innovation
- Contribute to regular curriculum review to help maintain a relevant, stimulating learning experience
- To ensure that new staff and Newly Qualified Teachers are appropriately trained, monitored, supported and assessed in relation to national standards
