Further information about the job
Design and Technology is a popular and valued subject within our school and plays a key role in delivering our ambition to provide a high-quality, ambitious and inclusive curriculum for all students. The department benefits from excellent, well-resourced specialist facilities and a broad, engaging curriculum offer, supported by an established and experienced team of six staff who share a genuine passion for their subject and are committed to inspiring this in the students they teach. Outcomes across the department are strong, reflecting the quality of teaching and the engagement of students.
At Key Stage 3, students experience a range of disciplines including Product Design, Textiles and Food, providing them with a strong foundation of knowledge, skills and creativity. The department is housed in purpose-built specialist spaces, including two brand new food rooms, two newly refurbished textiles rooms, two specialist workshops, dedicated classroom spaces and a computer suite for design and CAD/CAM work. The department is well resourced with a wide range of specialist equipment, including extensive material-specific CAM machinery, enabling students to design and manufacture high-quality outcomes. The department also benefits from the support of five dedicated technicians.
We aim to keep class sizes within Design and Technology below 21 students wherever possible, supporting a safe, well-managed environment and enabling high-quality practical teaching and learning.
At Key Stage 4, we currently offer GCSE Design & Technology, GCSE Food Preparation & Nutrition and GCSE Art: Fashion & Textiles. Uptake across these courses is strong, with four groups studying Food Preparation & Nutrition, three groups studying Design & Technology and two groups studying Fashion & Textiles. At Key Stage 5, numbers are also strong, with two groups studying A Level Design & Technology next year.
The department offers a strong co-curricular programme, including participation in F1 in Schools, inter-house competitions and opportunities for students to further develop their skills in Design and Technology for enjoyment beyond the classroom.
We warmly welcome applications from candidates with experience across any material area within Design and Technology. This is an exciting opportunity for a leader to shape and further develop the curriculum and provision, building on existing strengths and ensuring it remains ambitious, coherent and inclusive for all students.
The successful candidate will work closely with senior leaders to embed high-quality curriculum planning, consistent teaching approaches and effective assessment. There is a strong focus on developing independent learners, establishing clear routines within practical lessons, and ensuring a consistent experience for all students.
This role would suit an ambitious and reflective leader who is passionate about Design and Technology and committed to driving continued improvement in both curriculum and outcomes.
