What skills and experience we're looking for

We are seeking a Head of Humanities (history/geography specialist) with the drive, imagination and energy to deliver excellence. At Outwood Academy Bydales all students study both history and geography in years 7, 8 and 9, with all students choosing at least one humanity to study at GCSE.

This is a fantastic opportunity to lead our successful and supportive humanities department, who achieved outstanding results in 2022. We teach AQA Geography and we have developed a focused curriculum from Year 7 to Year 11, which prepares students well for the rigours of their GCSE courses and life beyond the academy. Our curriculum focuses on the 5 core concepts of Geography; sustainability, human and physical interactions, physical processes, climate change and development. In 2022, 82% of our students achieved a grade 4 or above; 66% a grade 5 or above and 42% achieved 7+. In History we have developed an exciting, innovative curriculum from Year 7 to Year 9 which builds key historical knowledge, concepts and skills which prepares students well for their GCSE studies and life beyond the academy. At GCSE we follow the Edexcel History course studying Medicine c1250 - present, Elizabethan England 1558 - 88, the American West c1835 - c1895 and Germany 1918 - 39. In 2022, 84% of our students achieved a grade 4 or above, 69% a grade 5 or above and 36% achieved 7+.

An excellent knowledge and understanding of humanities, together with a specialism of geography or history is essential.

The role of Head of Humanities would be ideal for either an experienced Head of Department or someone looking to make that next step. You will be supported extensively by a team of Humanities Directors allowing you to strategically lead the faculty, whilst having the support and advice from the Director team.
