What skills and experience we're looking for

We are looking for an experienced, values‑driven practitioner with a strong track record in delivering high‑quality PE, enriching co‑curricular sport, and raising participation for all pupils. You will bring a rigorous approach to quality assurance, a passion for physical education, and the ability to inspire staff and students alike. This post is ideal for someone seeking to make a significant impact, develop their leadership, and help shape the future of a truly unique academy.

What the school offers its staff

Shireland CBSO Academy, opened in September 2023, is a unique institution established in partnership with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. As the country’s first state school to open in partnership with an arts organisation, our academy offers an innovative, creative and inclusive environment where every student’s potential is nurtured and celebrated.

This is a rare opportunity to join us as our inaugural Head of PE. We are seeking an inspiring, energetic and forward‑thinking leader to shape and deliver a high‑quality PE curriculum across all key stages. You will lead the development of an ambitious, inclusive PE provision that promotes physical literacy, competitive sport, health and wellbeing, and a lifelong love of physical activity. You will also play a pivotal role in preparing our first KS4 and KS5 cohorts.

Our students benefit from a vibrant, music‑rich learning community, state‑of‑the‑art facilities, and a school culture built upon collaboration, inclusion and high aspirations. With the backing of the Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust, you will have access to strong networks, extensive CPD and the support needed to drive innovation and excellence within your department.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have the ability to teach PE and motivate students across all ability ranges and key stages
  • Be an outstanding classroom practitioner with high expectations
  • Have the ability to lead and motivate staff to deliver to the highest standards
  • Committed to raising standards for all

In return we will offer:

  • Opportunities across our MAT to enhance skills and experience across all Key Stages
  • Excellent career and professional development opportunities
  • A focus on staff wellbeing
  • An ICT rich environment which allows staff to be innovative in harnessing technology for learning
  • State of the art facilities
  • Supportive working environment and team ethos
