What skills and experience we're looking for
As the new Head of Department, you will be the main specialist teacher for our students and will support the work of a small number of experienced colleagues who contribute to the delivery of the subject alongside their primary roles. If required, we are in the fortunate position of being able to provide you with additional support and guidance as our previous Head of Department will remain at the school, albeit in a different promoted role.
Students are taught the AQA syllabus and we have enjoyed a strong record of academic success with this board. We currently choose to teach Forensic Psychology, Schizophrenia, and Gender as optional units within the course but the new Head of Department will undoubtedly bring their own experience and thoughts.
Psychology is delivered in timetabled lessons, 75 minutes in length. Students at the school are inquisitive and highly motivated. Many of them choose Psychology related degrees once leaving the school.
Responsibilities for all Heads of Department at the School
•Completing relevant quality assurance across the team including engaging with student voice.
- Line Management of colleagues and contributing to the performance management process (this role draws on a small number of colleagues from across other specialist areas)
- Deliver high quality teaching
- Complete duty activities that support the smooth running of the school.
- Organising appropriate fieldtrips, assemblies and enrichment activities
Our Head of Psychology will be responsible for ensuring strong academic outcomes in this subject.
Colleagues will need to carefully consider how the curriculum builds across the two year course and how trips and external visitors can bring the course to life.
A key aspect of the role will be ensuring that numbers opting into the subject remain high and you will think creatively about
What the school offers its staff
Thank you for your interest in joining The King’s (The Cathedral) School at this exciting time. An internal promotion of our current postholder to the position of Assistant Headteacher has created the opportunity for a suitably talented, energetic and passionate leader to apply for the role of Psychology.
The King’s (The Cathedral) School enjoys a very strong reputation both within the city and the local region. As one of a small number of state schools with close links to their local Cathedral, our distinct Christian culture lies at the heart of the school. We are a single academy Trust, located close to the city centre of Peterborough, educating students from the age of seven to eighteen.
We are rightly proud of our student’s academic achievements (progress is typically in the top 5% nationally for GCSE) but the educational philosophy at the school is far broader with students encouraged to take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities including Music, Sport and Drama.
Psychology is one of our most popular A Level subjects and thoroughly enjoyed by our students. We typically have two to three groups running in both Years 12 and 13 with the subject drawing on students from across all subject areas.
Further details about the role
An exciting element for a new Head of department is the opportunity to bring their own innovations and ideas to the role. In recent years the team have particularly focused on ensuring that students are able to respond effectively to the extended writing aspects of the course, along with developing opportunities for enrichment outside of curriculum time.
Commitment to safeguarding
The King’s (The Cathedral) School fully recognises the responsibility it has under section 175 of the Education
Act 2002 (as amended), the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009 (as amended) and Education
and Training (Welfare of Children) Act, 2021 to have arrangements in place to safeguard and promote the
welfare of children.
