Job description

A rare vacancy has become available to lead the Religious Studies department at Bluecoat Wollaton Academy. The department consists of a team of two further fully qualified, strong teachers who are dedicated to their professional learning and frequently discuss pedagogy and share resources. The department is housed in rooms which are fully equipped with interactive whiteboards. There is also a Christian Distinctiveness Lead (non-teaching) within the school to support wider experiences of faith and exploration of this, others, themselves and the wider world in which they live. This person also oversees collective worship in the school.

RS is a compulsory subject for all students from year 7 through to the end of Year 11. This is an hour a week at KS3 and two hours at KS4 for every child. At GCSE all students study Edexcel (B) and the two main units for this are: Paper 1B Religion and Ethics (Christianity); and then, Paper 2C: Religion, Peace and Justice (Islam). This split represents the two main faiths of the student body. This syllabus is taught elsewhere in the Trust and, as a result, there are great opportunities to share planning, resources and meet with a wider range of staff to collaborate as a broader RS team of staff which may not be the case in other schools. The product of this is that as well as secure outcomes we are recognised with the Gold Award for the quality of RS teaching and provision.

Our students are hardworking, respectful and genuinely enjoy Religious Studies lessons. Faith (a core value of the school along with ‘hope’ and ‘Love’ which are derived from Corinthians) is at the heart of the school in numerous ways. Indeed, many chose the school and are allocated places because of their Christian faith, attendance at a Church of England primary school or a few through our World Faith category – others simply on distance to the school. In short, whilst there is a faith element, parents of all faiths choose the school as it is a place where faith is valued and respected and this role is crucial to that culture, and at the centre of all that the school does to develop character and understanding of the whole child. We feel that it is a very special place to work and be part of a real community; we are confident you will see this when you visit.

The KS3 curriculum is two-thirds Christianity as required by SIAMS. The Understanding Christianity initiative is embedded throughout Year 7 in units on the Bible and the life of Jesus to ensure a deeper understanding of the fundamental beliefs of the Christian faith. The other units are designed to meet the requirements of the Nottingham City Agreed Syllabus, these include an exploration of the arguments for God's existence, an introduction to ethical theories, which are then applied to issues such as discrimination and medical ethics. Throughout these students gain knowledge of the key beliefs of Islam, Christianity as well as non-religious worldviews and are given opportunities to develop knowledge, understanding, analysis and evaluation in preparation for GCSE. Year 8 students also enter the NATRE spirited Arts projects.
