Head of Science job summary

We are excited to be advertising for a Head of Science who must be a Physics specialist, including the ability to teach A Level Physics. This is an exciting new role which has been created to support the further development of our successful science department.

The science department at Torquay Girls’ Grammar School consists of eleven specialist Science Teachers who are passionate about their subject. The team is supported by three Technicians, who play a key role in a department which places a strong emphasis on the practical aspect of their subject. Each subject is led by Head of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with the overall oversight of the department being led by the successful candidate of this newly created role.

Our KS3 Curriculum is designed to develop inquisitive scientists. Our curriculum, practicals and extra-curricular activities all aim to inspire curiosity within our students about the world of science. Students in Year 7 and Year 8 are taught in their form classes and have six hours of science per fortnight. In Year 9, students are taught in two bands by Biology, Chemistry and Physics specialists. They have two hours per subject per fortnight.

At KS4, students study Combined Science or can opt to study Triple Science. There is a high uptake of students who choose Triple Science. Combined Scientists have three hours per fortnight per subject, taught by specialist teachers; and Triple Scientists are taught fourteen hours per fortnight, also taught by specialist teachers.

Students who choose to study A Level science are taught ten hours per fortnight in Year 12, and nine hours per fortnight in Year 13, with independent work set for a tenth lesson.

Everyone within the science department works collaboratively to ensure a safe and efficient learning environment for all students. In addition, everyone contributes to wider opportunities such as extra-curricular activities including Science Week. You will also find the whole science team having cake at regular break times to test out baking skills across the department!

Torquay Girls’ Grammar School is a girls’ 11 to 16 selective Single Academy Trust, with a mixed Sixth Form (16 to 18), located in Torquay, Devon.

Our status as a Single Academy Trust means that we have the freedom to implement a curriculum intent which focusses on the whole child: to equip students for a future in which they have the academic qualifications, character skills and self-esteem to make decisions that lead to long, happy and content lives.

Our school is founded on our core values which apply to our whole community: equality, open minded, kindness, collaboration, and well-being.

When Ofsted visited in November 2023, our hard work was recognised by achieving ‘Outstanding’ in every category of the Ofsted Framework. This is no mean feat, and we are incredibly proud of this achievement. Our academic results are consistently high - in the 2025 Sunday Times Schools Guide, we ranked 3rd in Devon and 99th nationally for academic results - which is true testament to the continued dedication from both our students and staff.

Our school is a place where students want to learn and there is a deeply engrained sense of belonging and identity to the school’s history, values and traditions. Staff and pupils fully embrace our House Culture and the opportunities for extra curricular activities and trips.

If you are starting your professional career or are coming with a wealth of experience, you would be joining a school which values every individual within our school community.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch, we would love to hear from you!
