Qualifications, Training and relevant Experience

  • Qualified teacher status (QTS)
  • Relevant successful leadership and management experience as a headteacher, a deputy headteacher or assistant headteacher.
  • Teaching experience within, and preferably across, the primary phase.
  • Demonstrable experience of successful line management and staff development.
  • National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) *
  • A proven track record of leading school improvement and raising standards
  • Experience of more than one school *
  • Experience of working with vulnerable families and external agencies *

Skills and Knowledge

  • Detailed knowledge of primary education and the skills needed to agree and establish a vision, to develop a strategy for school improvement and to set realistic but challenging targets.
  • A comprehensive understanding of effective curriculum design.
  • A total commitment to inclusion, underpinned by the effective use of ‘assessment for learning’ strategies that embrace the needs of all pupils.
  • A good understanding of high-quality teaching and learning, enabling effective monitoring and accurate evaluation of classroom practice, leading to agreement to next steps for improvement.
  • Ability to role model exemplary classroom practice, if necessary.
  • Ability to drive improvement and to challenge the underperformance of staff.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret performance data using the information to set appropriate targets.

Organisational Management

  • Commitment to promote a positive, caring ethos with high standards of behaviour and attendance.
  • Ability to plan strategically and manage a budget, alongside the School Business Manager, that secures effective resource management and provides good value for money.
  • Ability to delegate effectively, enabling staff and teams to take on responsibility and hold each other to account.
  • Commitment to keep the school governors well informed and to work with them to agree strategic plans based on fully understood priorities.
  • Determination to establish and sustain a safe, secure and healthy school environment.
  • A sound knowledge of IT and its effective use in school management and organisation.

Accountability

  • An understanding of the statutory role of Governing Bodies, Ofsted, LA and DfE
  • An understanding of the professional accountability of a headteacher and the importance of holding others to account.
  • The confidence to welcome relevant and constructive challenge from governors and external experts.
  • A clear understanding of current safeguarding issues and legislation.

Working with Others

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work positively with others so that there is an agreed vision, with everyone working towards the same ends for the benefit of pupils.
  • Sensitivity when working with others, underpinned by compassion but without sentimentality.
  • Commitment to own performance management and ability to review the performance of others to drive school improvement.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with stakeholders, including the governing body.

Beech Green is a primary school in the suburb of Quedgeley on the South side of Gloucester. There are currently 320 children on roll. The governors are seeking a permanent Headteacher to follow a successful interim appointment. The school has seen new direction in the last 12 months, and this is an opportunity for an inspirational and aspirational Head to build on these foundations and continue to lead the school forward.

We are looking for a Headteacher who will:

  • Work with staff and the governing body to build a clear strategic direction
  • Use data and benchmarks effectively to support and monitor improvement
  • Ensure a strong culture of shared accountability
  • Be fully committed to the safety, welfare and inclusion of all children and staff
  • Support the development of staff offering strong and compassionate leadership
  • Continue to develop the quality of education so that pupil attainment and progress is high, particularly for the most disadvantaged children
  • Build effective partnerships with other local schools and relevant agencies
