What skills and experience we're looking for

Hillmead Primary School is a warm, inclusive and proudly child-centred community serving a diverse population in Bishop’s Stortford. Guided by our ethos;Include, Inspire, Empower, we are committed to ensuring every child receives the support and opportunities they need to thrive.

We are seeking an exceptional leader, a current headteacher, an experienced deputy headteacher, assistant headteacher or someone with equivalent senior leadership experience, who shares our belief in equity, creativity and high-quality inclusive practice. You will be a strong, proactive communicator, skilled in building positive relationships with pupils, staff and parents. You will understand the importance of clarity, emotional intelligence and early intervention when supporting and leading others.

Our new headteacher will be an inspiring curriculum leader with experience across the primary phases, able to champion our creative and oracy-rich approach to teaching and learning. You will value staff wellbeing, encourage professional autonomy and foster a culture where every member of the team feels empowered and appreciated.

Hillmead is a school with significant strengths, a dedicated and stable staff, a welcoming culture, high levels of inclusion and strong community partnerships. We also face the challenges common to many schools: increasing SEND need, financial pressure and falling birth rates. We are looking for a leader who can navigate these with strategic clarity, optimism and moral purpose.

What the school offers its staff

We offer a highly supportive governing body and excellent professional development. Whether you are new to Hertfordshire or embarking on your first headship, you will benefit from access to HFL Education’s Moving to New Headship programme, alongside tailored support and strong local professional networks. You will also join a community that cares deeply about its school, with children who are enthusiastic, curious and eager to welcome a leader who believes in them and helps them shine.
