The school enjoyed a ‘good’ Ofsted in 2023 recognising many of the school’s strengths. Leaders and staff are working together to raise KS4 outcomes, and area the successful candidate will pick up as a focus. The school ethos is inclusive and positive and there is a determination that pupils will receive a truly great education. We are looking for a new Headteacher with the ambition, experience and skills to lead our school into the next phase of its journey. Candidates who have previously been Headteachers, Deputy Heads, or equivalent will be warmly welcomed, and the level of trust support given by the trust can alter depending on experience of the successful candidate. Mary Webb School is part of a family of nine schools, that make up our MAT, TrustEd Schools. The school now, like all our schools, benefits from the support the Trust provides. Our Heads contribute freely to each other’s schools according to need, in a collaborative and open way, within a strong Trust structure and Trust processes. We look forward to appointing a colleague who shares our Trust collaborative vision. Our financial planning and processes are supported by the Trust finance team, led by Gwyneth Evans our Director of Finance, and the school has a secure budget with reserves. The successful candidate will work with our Trust education team: Jo Evans Deputy CEO; John Parr, Director of Standards (Outcomes); and Eve Morris Director of Standards (Inclusion), along with other Headteachers from our family of schools. They will be supported by a strong central Trust team. Mary Webb School and Science College is situated in a particularly beautiful location in the village of Pontesbury, just a few miles south of Shrewsbury. The site, surrounded by hills and woodland, provides an ideal setting for a school that aims to provide an educational experience firmly rooted in a modern rural context. We seek to open minds and widen horizons by ensuring that all our students are prepared for the challenges of life in the 21st century.
As a relatively small, community secondary school of over 700 students, staff and governors, we feel that the school has a number of distinctive features that makes it a little bit special. We aim to provide an environment in which each and every student can develop and flourish, and where the pursuit of excellence, in terms of personal development and academic achievement, is the aspiration of all. Relatively small class sizes ensures that every student receives personal attention.
The curriculum at Key Stage 4 is based around a core GCSE offer. We believe that this provides students with robust qualifications that support transition to post-16 education, training and employment. GCSE examination results at Mary Webb School and Science College have been good in recent years and are above national averages for attainment and progress across the curriculum.
Our most recent published results saw 65% of our students achieving GCSEs in both English and mathematics at grade 4 or above, with 43.8% achieving GCSEs in English and mathematics at grade 5 or above. The school’s Attainment 8 score was 47.9, which was higher than the Shropshire average for secondary schools, with our Progress 8 score being +0.08. Most importantly, all our students were able to go on to the destinations they planned to in September 2025.
