Headteacher job summary

The Helix is an Alternative Provision which includes a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), a Home Tuition Service, and a Hospital School located within the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH).

The Management Committee is seeking to appoint an experienced and dynamic leader who possesses a clear vision and understanding of working with a range of vulnerable learners to maximise achievement and success into independence. This will involve reshaping the designation of the provision to provide for a broader range of children with additional needs including those that are at risk of exclusion.

The successful applicant will be instrumental in working closely with the local authority to drive up standards within the PRU and to be actively involved in shaping the strategic direction reducing exclusions and developing a co-ordinated response to alternative education across Harrow.

Our provision serves pupils aged 5-16 who are unable to access mainstream education for a variety of reasons, including those with medical needs, those who are permanently excluded or at risk of exclusion, as well as other pupils for whom the local authority has a statutory responsibility. The core offer includes short-term placements with the aim of successful reintegration into mainstream settings and achieving accreditation to support pupils into the next stage of their education, employment, or training.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership and management of the PRU.
  • Work with the Management Committee to develop and implement policies and strategic direction.
  • Lead partnership working with local schools and other service users.
  • Ensure high standards of teaching, learning, and pupil achievement.
  • Work closely with the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital to ensure educational continuity for hospitalised pupils.
  • Manage and deploy staff effectively, ensuring continuous professional development.
  • Oversee pupil wellbeing, behaviour, and attendance.
  • Maintain effective links with parents, carers, and other stakeholders.
  • Attending Local Authority panels to provide specialist input.
  • Responsibility for arranging outreach and training to schools

About You:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Recent, successful experience and knowledge of teaching pupils with a wide range of additional learning needs, including significant social and emotional difficulties.
  • Proven track record of successful school leadership.
  • Experience in performance management and enhancing the professional development of staff.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and leadership skills.
  • Commitment to social inclusion and the principles of equal opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • NPQH or equivalent management qualification
  • Relevant in-service training.
