Higher Level Teaching Assistant job summary

Main Duties 

  • Supporting teachers in the classroom by taking responsibility for the planning, preparation, and delivery of specific learning activities for identified individuals/groups under an agreed system of supervision. For instance, working with children 1:1 or delivering sessions with small groups of students 

  • Managing classroom resources - prepare resources and materials in advance of the lesson 

  • Taking children on trips and visits and support with the running and organising lunchtime or afterschool activities 

  • To build and maintain successful relationships with students, treat them consistently, with respect and consideration. Such as luncheoning, playing board games with students who struggle socially to help build the students’ confidence and enhance self-esteem, inspiring them to learn

  • Managing heightened behaviours and keeping children safe by supporting students with identifying the reasons for their behaviour and providing strategies for both staff and students that can help manage any negative behaviour

  • To run, support and log in class and afterschool interventions as required

  • To be involved in keeping records and evaluating identified students’ progress and carry out structured classroom assessment/observation and feedback outcomes to staff

  • Have formal and informal meetings with teachers and parents to communicate progress, positive and negative behaviours

  • Provide targeted support to pupils across different year groups. 

  

  

Other Duties: 

  • To model good practice to both students and staff as an educational professional, demonstrating excellent punctuality, attendance and integrity.

  • To deal with any immediate problems or emergencies according to the academy’s policies and procedures 

  • Ensuring GDPR compliance for all handling of sensitive documents 

  • To respect confidential issues linked to home/students/teacher/academy work 

  • Safeguarding duties in case of fire and/or emergency evacuation where applicable 

  • To comply with the academy’s Child Safeguarding Procedures, including regular liaison with the academy’s Designated Child Safeguarding Person over any safeguarding issues or concerns 

  • To comply with the academy policies and procedures at all times 

  • To undertake other reasonable duties (with competence and experience) as requested, in accordance with the changing needs of the organisation.
