Higher Level Teaching Assistant job summary

Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

John Wilkinson Primary School

At John Wilkinson Primary School, we believe childhood should be rich in curiosity, care and meaningful experiences. We are a small school with big ambitions - committed to ensuring every child is known, supported and inspired to thrive.

We are seeking a skilled, enthusiastic and committed Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to work alongside our teachers, subject leaders and SEND team. This is a key role in our school, delivering high-quality support, leading learning, and helping to ensure that all children - including those who face additional barriers - make strong progress.

This role would suit someone who is passionate about inclusion, wellbeing and making a genuine difference to children’s lives.

We are looking for an HLTA who:
  • Can confidently cover PPA across the school (working alongside our sports leader) and provide additional cover for leadership release time where needed.
  • Has experience delivering targeted intervention programmes for individuals and small groups.
  • Is committed to inclusive practice, supporting all children, including those with SEND, additional needs and learning gaps.
  • Is confident leading learning, maintaining high expectations and supporting strong classroom practice.
  • Builds warm, positive and trusting relationships that help children grow in confidence, independence and resilience.
  • Demonstrates calmness, patience and professionalism, with a strong understanding of positive behaviour for learning.
  • Works collaboratively and reflectively with teachers and the SEND Leader to secure the best outcomes for pupils.
  • Is passionate about helping every child succeed - academically, socially and emotionally.
In return, we can offer:
  • The opportunity to be part of a small school where you can make a real impact.
  • A strong, values-led culture rooted in care, inclusion and high expectations.
  • A supportive and committed team who work closely together.
  • Opportunities for professional development and to grow your expertise.
  • Curious, enthusiastic children who are proud of their school.
  • A welcoming, family-centred community where everyone is known and valued.

If you are looking for a role where you can truly make a difference - within a school that combines ambition with care - we would be delighted to hear from you.
