Higher Level Teaching Assistant job summary
Pensford Primary School is a very enjoyable place at which to work. We will have just 102 children on roll in September, and every staff member knows every child. Our children are very well-behaved and high-performing, both in the classroom and in sport and other wider curriculum activities. Parents are extremely supportive and positive about the school, which has a very good reputation within the village of Pensford and beyond. For around 50% of our children, this is not their closest school, but has been chosen by their parents because of its high standards, good reputation and 'family feel'. Staff tend to stay here for a long time because they love working here and our first school value is Happiness!
We are looking for an HLTA who has the experience, motivation and skillset to work primarily in Key Stage 2, teaching Otter class (Year 3 and 4) for half a day and Kingfisher class (Years 5 and 6) for afternoons. Some PPA time would be included in the hours and the post-holder would be able to negotiate which subjects they teach from the wider curriculum each term. The overall structure of planning for our curriculum is well established, and you would be able to put your own creativity into the lessons too.
Opportunities for overtime are very likely to come up from time to time and you would be our first port of call for other ad hoc cover needs, or perhaps to accompany small groups of children to sports events and other activities. The core contract, though, is for just 8 hours per week (across 1.5 days, which could be negotiated). The role is for a fixed term until 31st August 2025, due to the fixed term secondment of a member of staff to another school.
The full range of responsibilities could also include:
- Carrying out regular PPA cover teaching for teachers
- Supporting classes by covering teacher absence and leadership release time across the school
- Meeting the academic, developmental and emotional needs of children
- Creating a safe and stimulating environment to promote learning and inclusion for all children
- Building and maintaining relationships with parents and carers and other childcare professionals/agencies
We warmly encourage visits to our school so you can see for yourself all that we can offer. Please contact the school office to arrange a convenient time.

Pensford School is a co-educational primary catering for children between the ages of 4 and 11 years. Currently we have 4 mixed age classes (Year R, Years 1 and 2, Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6). It is situated 6 miles south of Bristol on the A37. Our period buildings have had extensive refurbishment over the past few years and provide attractive, contemporary learning spaces. Our grounds have been redesigned and developed to create a stimulating outdoor learning environment. In June 2019, we joined The Partnership Trust, which is a multi-academy Trust.
We enjoy close links with our local community including established collaborative partnerships with other schools in the locality through which we endeavour to deliver the best outcomes for all primary age children in the Chew Valley area. The collaboration supports working with a range of professionals and building skills as well as opportunities for all staff. The children in our communities are at the very heart of everything we do within the school and the cluster.
Our vision for Pensford Primary is to be a high achieving, vibrant learning community in which children are nurtured, motivated and have outstanding expectations for themselves and others. We believe that every member of our school community has a right to achieve their potential in an atmosphere which balances challenge with support. We aim to provide a climate for learning, which engages, inspires and motivates children.
We believe that strong and effective home-school partnerships are essential to the successful academic, social and emotional development of the children in our care. We work hard to ensure parents and carers are involved in our school at many different levels by holding curriculum workshops and encouraging parent helpers during the school day, being involved in the PSA (Pensford School Association) and on the governing body.
We have very high aspirations for all of the children and staff in our school. The entire school community works together to ensure that the children reach their full potential. Our goal is to develop life-long learning characteristics in children that encourage self-leadership skills, helping each child to feel successful as individuals, learners and critical thinkers.
