Higher Level Teaching Assistant job summary

As a HLTA, you will work collaboratively with teaching staff and the SENDCo to deliver inclusive, engaging, and targeted support for pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). You will take a lead role in delivering learning activities, supporting interventions, monitoring pupil progress, and contributing to the wider provision across the school.

This role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on pupil outcomes, particularly through closing attainment gaps and supporting pupils to achieve their full potential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, deliver and evaluate learning activities for individuals, small groups and, where appropriate, whole classes

  • Lead and deliver targeted interventions, monitoring their impact on pupil progress

  • Support pupils with SEND, including implementing and contributing to EHCPs and annual reviews

  • Work collaboratively with teachers to adapt learning and resources to meet individual pupil needs

  • Assess, record and report on pupil progress, using data to inform next steps

  • Promote positive behaviour and act as a strong role model for pupils

  • Contribute to the planning and preparation of lessons and learning resources

  • Work closely with the SENDCo, staff, and external professionals to support pupil outcomes

  • Support and guide teaching assistants, sharing best practice where appropriate

  • Contribute to the wider life of the school, including trips, events, and pastoral support

What We Are Looking For

Qualifications

  • Holds HLTA status (or is willing to work towards this)

  • Has a Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning (or equivalent)

  • Has GCSE (or equivalent) Grade 4/C or above in English and Maths

Experience

  • Has significant experience working in a school setting

  • Has experience planning and delivering learning activities independently

  • Has a strong track record of delivering effective interventions

  • Has experience supporting pupils with SEND, including EHCP provision

  • Has contributed to pupil assessment, monitoring and reporting

Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of teaching, learning and child development

  • Ability to adapt teaching to meet the needs of all learners

  • Knowledge of SEND strategies and inclusive practice

  • Ability to assess and track pupil progress effectively

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to work independently, use initiative and manage workload

  • Confidence in supporting and guiding other support staff
