Intervention Tutor job summary

Intervention Tutor

St Nicholas Catholic Academy, Liverpool

Could you be the person who changes the trajectory of a child's education?

At St Nicholas Catholic Academy, part of St Joseph Catholic Multi Academy Trust, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their starting point.

Due to a significant increase in pupil numbers and the proven impact of our intervention model, we are seeking an exceptional Intervention Tutor to join our growing academy community on a permanent basis. This is an opportunity to play a pivotal role in transforming educational outcomes for children who need it most.

A school that is growing and thriving

St Nicholas is one of Liverpool's fastest-growing primary schools.

Our pupil population has increased dramatically from 156 pupils to 194, with numbers expected to exceed 210 pupils, bringing new opportunities and new challenges. Many pupils join us throughout the academic year, often having experienced disruption to their education, gaps in learning, language barriers or significant challenges in accessing the curriculum.

For these children, effective intervention is not an optional extra.

It is life-changing.

That's why this role is so important.

Why this role exists

The success of our intervention programme has been remarkable.

Our targeted support has helped pupils make accelerated progress in reading, writing and mathematics, contributing to strong outcomes across the school, including impressive Key Stage 2 attainment and significant improvements for vulnerable learners and pupils with SEND.

At a time when many schools are reducing support programmes, St Nicholas has taken the strategic decision to invest further because we know intervention works.

We know that when children receive the right support at the right time, they flourish.

The successful candidate will join a team committed to ensuring that no child falls behind because of circumstances beyond their control.

The difference you'll make

You'll work directly with children who need additional support in reading, phonics and mathematics, helping them develop the confidence, skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the classroom.

You will:

  • Deliver high-quality, structured interventions in reading and mathematics.
  • Support children who are at risk of falling behind their peers.
  • Work with pupils who have joined the school mid-year and need rapid support to access learning.
  • Build confidence, resilience and positive attitudes towards education.
  • Use assessment information to monitor progress and celebrate success.
  • Work closely with teachers, leaders and support staff to ensure interventions have maximum impact.
  • Contribute to whole-school literacy and numeracy improvement strategies.
  • Every day you will see the direct impact of your work on children's lives.

    Who we're looking for

    We're seeking someone who:

  • Is passionate about improving outcomes for children.
  • Believes every child can achieve with the right support.
  • Has strong literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Can build positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Is organised, reflective and motivated by pupil progress.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues and families.
  • Is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Shares and supports the Catholic ethos and values of the academy.
  • Experience of phonics, reading interventions, tutoring, SEND support or primary education would be advantageous, but most importantly we are looking for someone who genuinely wants to make a difference.

Why join St Nicholas Catholic Academy?

This is an exciting time to join us.

Our academy is growing rapidly and serves a wonderfully diverse community in the heart of Liverpool. We are proud of our inclusive ethos, ambitious culture and unwavering commitment to ensuring every child receives an excellent education.

You'll be joining a dedicated team that:

  • Places children at the centre of every decision.
  • Invests in professional development and staff wellbeing.
  • Celebrates collaboration and innovation.
  • Values every member of staff.
  • Understands the transformative power of education.
  • At St Nicholas, you won't simply deliver interventions.

You'll help children develop the skills, confidence and self-belief that will shape their futures.

Come and see what makes St Nicholas special

We know that choosing the right school is about more than reading a job description.

We warmly encourage prospective applicants to visit the academy and experience first-hand the welcoming atmosphere, dedicated staff team and wonderful children that make St Nicholas Catholic Academy such a rewarding place to work.

A visit will give you the opportunity to see our intervention provision in action, learn more about our vision for the future and meet the people who make our academy such a special place.

To arrange a school tour or an informal conversation about the role, please contact Alison McLoughlin on 0151 709 5532 or email office@stnicholas.sjcmat.co.uk.

    Be part of something bigger

At St Nicholas Catholic Academy, we know that targeted intervention changes lives.

With increasing pupil numbers, significant levels of mobility and a growing demand for personalised support, this role has become a vital part of our long-term strategy for success. The successful candidate will help ensure that every child, regardless of their starting point, has the opportunity to learn, achieve and flourish.

Join us and become part of a team that is making a measurable and lasting difference to children's lives every single day.
