We are seeking to appoint an outstanding professional to work within the Mainstream+ provision at the College. Mainstream+ delivers a bespoke secondary educational experience for young people aged 11-16 with Cognition & Learning and/or SEMH needs, including those with an EHCP.

We are looking for an individual who has:

  • Ideally experience and understanding of SEND and the Annual Review Process;

  • The ability, imagination and drive to enrich the Lutterworth College Mainstream+ curriculum to students to ensure high quality provision and participation.
  • vision and drive combined with the ability to work with a team of committed professionals and to contribute to the College at a strategic level.

We aim to recruit the best teachers who teach the best lessons. For this reason, we try to clearly articulate our vision, values and expectations when putting together information for applicants and we always give a lot of attention to appointing the right person.

We aim to recruit staff who:

  • Are excited by their role and the opportunity to ensure our young people flourish;
  • Love the processes of teaching and learning and are keen to continually develop their own skills;
  • Recognise that teaching can be a demanding job and react positively to those demands;
  • Will subscribe to the ethos of the Trust and ‘go the extra mile’ in terms of time and commitment to get the very best success for our students;
  • Take every opportunity, in and out of the classroom, to talk to students, model expected behaviours and build positive student/teacher relationships;
  • Are quick to praise and slow to criticise; and
  • Are not afraid to admit to seeing themselves as potential leaders of the future.

Mainstream+ Provision at Lutterworth College

Mainstream+ is a small group provision that was implemented in 2023 aiming to support our most vulnerable students in their transition into Year 7 and beyond. The provision is based on a more primary model, being taught mainly by one member of staff, in one location for a significant amount of time each week. Mainstream+ delivers a bespoke secondary educational experience for young people aged 11-16 with Cognition and Learning and/or SEMH needs, that is both appropriate and ambitious, and which involves a rich, broad, and balanced curriculum. This is not a specialist provision in the same way as a DSP or ERP provision. The intention is that children with these Cognition and Learning and SEMH needs, including those with an EHCP, access a primarily mainstream experience, covering the national curriculum subjects.

Students in Mainstream+ travel through year 7 and 8 as a smaller mentor group with access to all the mainstream facilities at the College. In KS4, the ambition is for Mainstream+ students to become increasingly integrated into the mainstream curriculum offer, whilst benefitting from being able to access a range of suitable GCSE, vocational and equivalent qualification options. They experience bespoke smaller physical environments. Greater structure around learning and a higher level of pastoral care is incorporated into the timetable for young people accessing ‘Mainstream+’ support.

The educational model is designed for students to access the curriculum as a cohort (a maximum 15 students per class) with work differentiated to meet the needs of those within the group. Students receive teaching in core subjects (English, Maths, Humanities and PSHE) from their class teacher, KS2-3 Transition Teacher, and access specialist teaching and facilities within the main school for foundation subjects. The provision is designed to allow students to access Science, PE and D&T within the mainstream curriculum facilities, taught by subject specialists. For PE and D&T students are integrated into the main school curriculum classes. The timetable for Mainstream+ is designed so that students can, if appropriate, transition and join the main school cohort for some or all of their lessons, at any point.

The start and finish of the school day is critical for young people with SEND. The Lutterworth College Mainstream+ provision considers carefully the needs of the individual young people for these daily transition points, but offers a universal service for Mainstream+ students in the following way:

  • Safe space to visit at the start of each day
  • Safe space to visit at the end of each day
  • Consistent Mentor and Pastoral Manager to establish strong relationships with home
  • Enhanced transition process from KS2-3

Students in Mainstream+ receive a high level of adult support. Alongside the small class teaching the school deploys Teaching Assistants as required to support Mainstream+ students. These colleagues support students accessing Mainstream+ to overcome their individual learning barriers and become increasingly independent as they progress through the school. Mainstream+ students receive support from Teaching Assistants who work specifically in the provision to support the class teacher, alongside support from Teaching Assistants in the main school curriculum lessons in PE, Art, Computing, Design & Technology, Food, Drama and Music.

Further details about the role and specific responsibilities for the post of Mainstream+ KS2-3 Transition Teacher can be found in the KS2-3 Transition Teacher Job Description.
